I was born in England, but have lived in Southern California for many years. I m now retired and live in the Pacific NW in a little seaside city amongst the giant redwoods and wonderful harbor, almost at the Oregon border. My husband and I have one cat, called Midnight and she is featured in two of my latest Sci-Fi short stories. I love Science Fiction, animals, and trying to help others. I publish under Doreen Milstead as well as my own name. My photo was taken right before the coronation of QE II in the UK.

Brunette Peggy Quartermaine's heart raced as she clutched her romance novel tighter in her delicate hands. Her painted pink fingernails matched the color of her palms, while her fingertip showed white; blood restricted from reaching the tip. The heroine of her novel waited for the handsome beau, a rich guy to decide her fate. Everything waited for the heroine, much as Peggy's breath came in rapid hesitations; her ears shutting out all the sounds of the people playing in Pratt Park, particularly the two guys, Franklin Tureen, and his pal, Jack Douglass, who threw a blue Frisbee.

Jack, who had a square face, pep talked Franklin, Go on dude, talk to her. She is doing nothing but reading a sappy romance novel. She's waiting for her Prince charming to show up. Jack jested, purposely throwing the blue Frisbee higher and harder toward Franklin.

Franklin, a blond, with handsome good looks and a non-player's heart worked twice as hard to catch the blue Frisbee. He jumped up higher. Ha, ha. Got it. You think you can get one by me, Jack, old buddy; you're crazy. You know how good I am. Franklin flicked his wrists after bending his right elbow and sent the missile flying at Jack.

Jack caught it in his stomach, fractions of an inch before it hit him. Good, Franklin. Show your skill. But I'm not the one needing to see them. Jack raised his head and pointed the blue Frisbee to the woman, a gorgeous curly brunette reading. In her peach dress with big blue and white flowers on it, the woman had her legs crossed at the knee, reading, blind and oblivious to anyone or anything. Franklin turned around just as Peggy bit her lip anxious for the next page to come. Her face looked flush.

She seems upset, Jack. I'd rather pass. You know I'm not good with the ladies. Franklin said, more scared than ever now. Privately, Franklin wanted to go over there. He wanted to act all macho, say something arrogant, grab her perhaps and lead her away to a bar. Further, he added -- kiss her suddenly by surprise, too. Something crazy and inappropriate he thought.

Now instantly in love, Franklin imagined she kissed sweet and soft. Probably likes one of those buff, arrogant rich snobs.

Jack faked as if he were going to throw the blue Frisbee to his left, so Franklin moved right.

Gotcha, cried Jack. Still got the Frisbee. He pulled his hand from behind his back.

Peggy heard a honeybee buzzing by her as it went to the patch of yellow and pink flowers twenty feet behind her. When excited romantically, the world grew small. Peggy noticed insignificant things. Fluttering of birds nested in the tree to her left, not more than ten feet away. Her ears heard the creek as her back pressed on the park’s wooden bench. Her feet noticed the space between them.

The beau rode up in his brougham carriage. He hopped out and ran, ran, ran up the long winding path to the heroine's manor house, or rather, her father’s. He wore a serious face. His blond hair flopped wildly as he ran. Peggy flinched as a ladybug, with its red
