Canning your own food is a simple and easy way to ensure that you are living as sustainably as possible.
More and more people are waking up to the benefits of a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. Done right making choices to support this way of living can be good for your wallet and good for the planet – a win-win.
If you grow your own food you will know that there are times of the year when you have a glut of one particular product, it might be strawberries or apples; asparagus or zucchini. Canning your produce at home means that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor even when it is out of season. It also means that you do not become fed up of eating yet another creative pea based recipe!
Even if you do not grow your own produce you can start to get involved in home canning. Shopping at the farmer’s markets or organic stalls means that you will face the same problems of seasonality as the person who grows their own. This is the price you pay for tasty, fresh, seasonal produce with minimum food miles! What you can do, however, is can some of the produce that you purchase for use later in the year. Not only will you be able to enjoy high quality locally grown food out of season but you will not even have to go down to the shops to buy it – it will already be in your larder. You will also be saving valuable money – just think of those high-end preserves that look so inviting on the shelves at the store! You can make those exact products at home for mere pennies.
Food from the supermarkets is, often and inevitably, treated with chemicals and pesticides. These additives may have been passed as legal by the FDA but can you really be sure that they will not harm your children? Far better to can your own food, then you know
