1.The Epidemic of Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Type II Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic, complex and multifactorial disease that arises as a result of the interaction of the environment with the gene pool. Environmental factors that contribute to the prevalence of Type II Diabetes Mellitus worldwide are all risk factors that increase the susceptibility to develop this common disease, except for the specific genome of each person.

Thus, for Type II Diabetes Mellitus we have:

Modifiable factors: overweight, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking, unfavorable intrauterine environment, stress, drugs, poor or harmful intestinal microbiota, diseases that increase the risk of developing it and chemical compounds present in the environment (some of these synthetic substances are endocrine disruptors).

Unmodifiable factors: age, sex, ethnicity, family history, previous gestational diabetes and abnormal glucose tolerance.

The World Health Organization tells us that the number of people with diabetes has increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 and the global prevalence of this epidemic has increased from 4.7 per cent in 1980 to 8.5 per cent in 2014.

13.8% of the Spanish population has Type II Diabetes Mellitus and 30% of all Spanish citizens present problems with glucose metabolism.

Although we have, overall, better analytical methods, 50% of cases of diabetes remain undiagnosed. That is, there is an undiagnosed diabetic patient for each one already diagnosed.

People with Type II Diabetes Mellitus can not regulate the amount of glucose in the blood, the insulin being secreted by the pancreas the hormone responsible for reducing the concentration of blood glucose (glycemia) by transporting glucose from the bloodstream to myocytes of the muscle, mainly, adipocytes of
