    CHOSEN!

Rejection that is not processed properly will rob you of power.

    Jamelle Sanders

    Chapter 1: Rejection

I can already see some of you looking bewildered when you saw the title for this first chapter. However, you have to understand that I know that soul leadership is what the world needs. I could throw out all types of formulas and principles that will not truly help you in your leadership. Or I can get to the root of what is really holding you back from leading effectively. Rejection is the root of all leadership woes. In a time where the very foundation of leadership has been shaken, you can almost always trace these failures back to rejection. In fact, rejection is a principle that dates back to the Bible. We see in Genesis 4:9 where Cain is livid that his sacrifice was not received. He utters the infamous words am I my brother’s keeper? What filled Cain with such deep rage? It was the thought of being rejected. Rejection is a painful emotion. Rejection that is not processed properly will rob you of power and restrict your potential.

Rejection is simply the dismissing or refusal of a thing. Rejection is a real emotion that we have all felt at one time or another in our lives. The problem with rejection is that it is not the pain that we cannot deal with. The real problem with rejection is the fact that it leaves us feeling that we are not good enough. Rejection sends a signal to our brains that we do not measure up. Rejection leaves us feeling unworthy. I know about rejection and I know the damage that it can do in the development process. In order to truly understand rejection we must do a case study.

One of my favorite leaders in scripture was David. David was a seventeen year old tending to the sheep in his father’s house. David had been going through life minding his own business. He was tending to the sheep and protecting them from danger. David was a strong man and he had conquered some things in his life. David conquered the lion. Then he defeated the bear. All of this was the preparation for defeating the giant Goliath. Never despise any part of your development because it is all preparing you for destiny. In the Bible, Goliath is an enemy of Israel that is tormenting and taunting the people. The king has a reward for the person that can defeat this giant in the land. David decides to take on the challenge of defeating Goliath. Are you ready to defeat your Goliath?

David’s brothers laughed because you have to understand that Goliath was over nine feet tall. David was just a seventeen year old. In fact, the only reason David was there was to bring lunch for his brothers. Yet in the midst of this something rose up on the inside of him. It was holy indignation about this uncircumcised philistine that was mocking his God. In other words, it was David coming to an awareness that illegal things should not be allowed to exist in your life. I wonder what illegal things are growing in your life because you refuse to dismiss them. David was in the middle of what seemed like an impossible situation. Leaders are always assigned to deal with impossible situations. Impossibility is always the opportunity to make a positive impact. David is given armor and he begins to move toward Goliath, but the armor was too big for David. In other words, you ensure your failure when you fight with things that don’t fit you. You will never prevail fighting with weapons that have not been proven. David decided to reach for five stones and a sling. While this seems unconventional, victory will always be birthed out of an instruction that is uncommon. An undefeated life is the product of uncommon instructions.

The crowd laughed at David because of his youth. However, we are in a time where young leaders are going to emerge in an unprecedented way. In fact, I have been blessed to speak on some of the largest platforms in the world. Many were amazed to learn just how young I was. It is not about age but maturity. Young mature leaders are getting ready to emerge and defeat Goliath! I love the story of David because it is brilliant. There is brilliance in a bag! David reaches into his bag and pulls out a stone. What is the principle here? If you want to win any fight you must go back to the foundational stones that have anchored you. It is the things that anchor you that give you an advantage. David slung the stone with his slingshot and hit Goliath in the forehead. David utterly destroyed leadership that dishonored his God and his nation.

While I could go on and on about David, I want to go a little further. We know that David was given one of Saul’s daughter’s and invited to eat at the king’s table because he defeated Goliath. However, we also know that many years would pass before David actually occupied the throne of Israel. Psalm 51:5 David says Behold I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. David was not allowed in the house with his other brothers. David was the other son of Jesse. In other words, this was a child Jesse had with another woman. We see in 1st Samuel 16 when the prophet Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint a new king that David was nowhere to be found. After the prophet had seen all the other sons he asked Jesse did he have any other sons. Jesse responded by saying just David. Can you imagine your parent referring to you as just the one in the field tending to the sheep? He’s non-important. We don’t really consider him part of the family. He is really non-existent. This must have been very painful for David.

While the resume of David is impressive, David experienced a life that was rocked with tragedy. David experienced everything from losing a child, the raping of his daughter, the betrayal of his son, the death threats of
