Essential Oils - Cortney Gray
INTRODUCTION
Most of us would like to have healthier, younger looking skin or find an easy way to deal with problem skin and blemishes. Whilst cosmetic products are available to buy in many shops and pharmacies, these can be expensive and can show little improvement even after prolonged use.
In fact, the active ingredients in many of these expensive cosmetic products can be found in their base form as essential oils. By choosing the right essential oil for your skin type or condition, you can better target your skin treatment for younger, healthier skin and relief from chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. An essential oil solution is often a cheaper and more effective alternative to pre-prepared cosmetic creams and ointments.
This eBook takes a look at forty of the best essential oils for rejuvenating, repairing and returning balance to the skin. The oils are categorized according to skin type and use with a full review at the end of the eBook.
After reading this eBook, you will be familiar with forty natural skin treatments and will be able to target specific skin problems with the most beneficial essential oils.
Essential Oils - What are they?
Before looking at our top forty essential oils, it is worth first taking the time to talk about essential oils, their use and how to safely prepare them for use on the skin. It is important to read this chapter before practicing any home treatment to avoid any adverse effects from misuse.
Essential oils are taken from natural botanic sources. The essence from a plant is collected from steam distillation or cold pressing and prepared as an oil for natural healing. The essential oils of a plant contain its active ingredients and make them particularly effective in healing and rejuvenation.
However, because essential oils are the essence of the plant in its most concentrated form, they can be harmful if applied directly to the skin without dilution or when applied too frequently. Therefore, it is best to follow the following simple advice for how to prepare essential oils for dermatological use.
Firstly, essential oils should not be applied to the skin without first being diluted in some way. This can either be done by using a carrier oil, which is a substance such as vegetable oil or coconut oil, or by adding a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a basic unscented skin cream. If using a carrier oil, be sure to buy one that has been prepared for use on the skin, rather than buying a product from the supermarket, for example. These carrier oils have undergone their own distilling process to make sure that they are suitable for dermatological use and that only beneficial properties remain. These can be purchased online or from specialist homeopathy or aromatherapy stores. Note also that whilst many carrier oils are food-based, food products or other oily substances cannot be used as a substitute for a carrier oil. Products such as margarine, Vaseline or butter should not be used as a base for essential oils.
However, using a carrier oil or basic cream is a great way to create combination ointments that target your particular dermatological needs. Read the following chapters to identify the essential oils which will be most beneficial for your skin and use one or more in combination to create your own natural skin treatment. Alternatively, a few drops of essential oil in your bath can also release the effects to help combat the breakout of any skin condition, although the regular use of a cream or ointment can help to keep skin problems at bay.
Before beginning to use any essential oil, you should first perform a ‘patch test’ on the skin of your inner elbow. Apply a small amount of the oil to your arm and wait at least twenty-four hours to check for any sign of irritation or allergy. If symptoms appear, discontinue use. Overuse of essential oils or use of essential oils to which you are sensitive can cause damage to the skin. Do not use any oils that cause irritation, redness, hotness or any other type of discomfort.
Essential oils used properly can be wonderful in helping to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, however, any unexplained changes to the skin which are persistent, or any condition which worsens over time should be examined by your doctor.
Essential oils should never be used on sensitive areas and should be kept away from the eyes.
Any properly sourced essential oil bought from a reputable store will come with instructions for use. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to protect your skin and to get the most out of your essential oils.
CHAPTER 1 – NORMAL SKIN
Normal skin is not perfect skin, but it is skin which is generally well balanced and does not suffer from frequent dryness or oiliness. People with normal skin may have a few blemishes or bouts of acne or dry or flaky skin, but, overall, their skin is clear and does not feel either too tight or particularly greasy. This chapter lists three essential oils which are useful for people of this skin type, who do not suffer from any particular skin complaint, but would like to maintain healthy skin and feel like their skin is toned and glowing.
Cedar wood
Cedar wood essential oil is extracted from the Cedar Wood tree and has been cited as an antiseptic, antiseborrhoeic, tonic, fungicide and astringent. In laymen's terms, this means that cedar wood essential oil can fight infection, treat seborrhoeic skin conditions, tone the skin, combat fungal infections and reduce the appearance of capillary veins and redness in the skin.
As an essential oil with such a wide range of properties, it is particularly useful in being used as a daily ointment for normal skin and can help prevent oils from building up in the skin or the appearance of acne. It is a good choice as a daily cleanser.
As an antiseborrhoeic, cedar wood essential oil can be used to treat seborrhea, which most of us will know as dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis is when the same condition affects the skin. These conditions are very common, which is another reason why
