The last century has brought an exponential increase in change to the world, with each generation building technology quicker than the last. Alec Ross, former senior advisor for innovation for the secretary of state, reflects on his own family—from his immigrant great-grandfather to his coalminer grandfather to his attorney father—and how each person’s job has been radically altered by changing circumstances. Globalization and automation have dramatically changed the world’s economy, lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty but leaving many others behind. With this in mind, he looks ahead to the next wave of innovation, the things that he believes will change the fundamentals of our lives over the next two decades.

Author Alec Ross explores the coming innovations that will revolutionize our world. A West Virginia native and grandson of a coalminer, he’s acutely aware that there are winners and losers as technology evolves. In The Industries of the Future, he looks ahead at what industries will grow and what the world needs to do in order to adapt to these changing circumstances.
Ross begins by exploring the possibilities of robotics in everything from healthcare to manufacturing to driverless cars. These robots hold great potential for increasing health and productivity, but also pose a threat to laborers around the world, who may find themselves replaced by machines, even in fields we assume are automation-proof like waitressing or caregiving.
Next, Ross looks at improvements in medicine, particularly the opportunities that arise from genomic sequencing. By better understanding the genome, we will be able to create more precise medicines that can target specific problems with fewer side effects. In other parts of the world, great improvements in medical care have been made due to the
