Stephen D. Bryant
Stephen D. Bryant was the world editor and publisher of Upper Room Ministries from 1997 to 2009 and is currently directing international ministry initiatives for the General Board of Discipleship. Before his election as world editor and publisher, Bryant served as director of spiritual formation for The Upper Room and as the international director of The Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis movements. His vision of small groups as important settings for spiritual formation and his experience in the contemplative life as well as local churches provided the inspiration for the Companions in Christ series. Bryant was instrumental in shaping the foundational 28-week resource.

I What Is an Emmaus Group Reunion?
The Emmaus group reunion is a small accountability group of two to six persons who have usually participated in the three-day Walk to Emmaus and who want to continue their pursuit of a life lived wholly in the grace of God. These small follow-up groups help pilgrims translate the message conveyed on the Walk to Emmaus weekend into a daily walk with Christ. With the regular support of a few faithful friends, the gift of God’s love in Jesus Christ becomes a lifestyle of Christian discipleship through the threefold discipline of piety, study, and action.
Perseverance in Grace
Persons may call their group reunions by different names: reunion groups,
fourth day groups,
accountability groups,
share groups,
discipleship groups,
journey groups,
and Christian support groups.
Irrespective of name, group reunions have a common purpose: to help us persevere in grace. Group reunions undergird our desire to carry those aspects of the three-day experience that we most value and that are fundamental to our formation as faithful Christian disciples into our everyday lives.
How do we persevere in grace? The talk on Perseverance tells us that the key is regular contact with Christ and with other Christians who share the vision of life lived wholly in the grace of God. The group
