    Introduction

    This e-book will in no way make you a master of cryptocurrencies. It dips your toes in the cryptocurrencies water and hopes to leave you wanting to dive in. I’ll explain some of the reasons I find cryptocurrencies alluring and give you an introduction to some of the concepts and reasoning behind them. The e-book aims to be understandable, rather than too technical. If you’ve heard something of cryptocurrencies and are looking for a starting point for more information, this might just be the book for you.

    What Is It?

    I’ve heard you talking about bitcoin a lot and you really seem to like it. What exactly is bitcoin?

    The short answer to this is: Nobody knows. The expanded answer is: Nobody knows, yet. But don’t despair! We’re starting to get some idea.

    When bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency, was described in a white paper¹ in November 2008, its creator referred to it as an electronic cash system, therefore some form of money or currency. The debate rages on, now even stronger than ever, over whether or not it really is money, some new form of asset class, or just people going crazy. These arguments are outside the scope
