      This chapter book for beginning readers is the 2018 winner of the Geisel Award. Each chapter is an episode in a day with brothers Charlie and Mouse. Not all stories have a moral, and these don't. They're about children doing the things that children do. One of the stories is about a neighborhood party, and it includes a lot of names of the other children who joined the party. Names can be difficult for beginning readers, and they probably won't have learned most of these from vocabulary lists in reading class. It's an enjoyable book, but it lacks the sparkle of other Geisel Award winners like You Are (Not) Small and We Are Growing!.

      A pair of brothers go through their day, having tiny adventures along the way, like a neighborhood party and an idea to make money. This simple but sweet story will appeal to young readers who like seeing everyday life depicted in books. It is especially useful for children transitioning out of early readers but not quite ready for longer chapter books, as it is presented as a series of vignettes. Children can pause if they start to feel too tired, or they can see the book through to the end. Each 'chapter' is only a few pages long, with each page having roughly five short sentences. There's a little bit of repetition that could be helpful for beginning readers, and the vocabulary is fairly basic. However, there are quite a few names thrown out there, which could be a little more challenging for some readers. The style of the book (both text and illustration) reminds me a little bit of Maurice Sendak's The Sign on Rosie's Door, except this is a little bit more accessible for young audiences. The illustrations reveal a diverse community in a number of ways, including that the brothers happily wear traditionally "feminine" clothing/accessories to the party at the park.

      Great story. I thought it felt authentic to a child's real world. Charlie and Mouse reminded me of Frog and Toad.
