About this ebook

Overcoming trauma or a major obstacle in life takes courage—a word that originally meant, “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.”

The ability to change a negative into a positive, to turn lemons into lemonade, and to then share that recipe with the world to prevent others from suffering—it’s one of the most beautiful things a person can do.

These stories and storytellers in Lemonade Stand are full of heart and are the definition of courage. Inside you’ll find a transforming look at a young woman who was assaulted by her best friend, a father navigating raising newborn triplets, and a man who lost his eyesight in a tragic accident and proved that you don’t need eyes to truly see.

When life gives you lemons, squeeze, add sugar and pick up a copy of The i’Mpossible Project’s Lemonade Stand.

    Creating a Lemon Themed Cookbook

    Joshua Rivedal

Throughout my teenage years and into my mid-twenties, life didn’t just give me lemons—it practically pelted them at me.

Suicides, mental illness, frequent breakups, fights with family members, ignorant and bad decisions, and a lack of income and job opportunities were all commonplace. All around me I saw lemons but instead of seeing the possibility that I could make lemonade or even a few lemon popsicles I got angry, shut down, and the universe became all about me and a vendetta against god for forgetting to pass out a few strawberries and plums with all the lemons being thrown my way.

It was only after experiencing a crisis at age twenty-seven and learning about empathy and reframing (a semi-fancy word in psychology for looking at horse poop and choosing to see it as nutrient-enriched manure) that I was able to see that a) the universe does not revolve around me or what I did or didn’t get; and b) that all those lemons could be made into lemonade that can be shared with others to keep them cool, hydrated, and healthy.

For over six years I’ve been making lemonade—helping others through storytelling, seminars, and curriculum on mental health and suicide—but several years ago I wanted to learn how other people made lemonade. I needed to find new recipes and share them with the world. And so … I founded The i’Mpossible Project as a way to connect with lemonade amateurs and masters from around the world (holy hell, I hope you’re following this metaphor ;) ).

In 2015 and in 2017, The i’Mpossible Project released two volumes of 50 true, short stories: Reengaging with Life, Creating a New You; and Changing Minds, Breaking Stigma, Achieving the Impossible. The former included a diversity of stories and topics, while the latter was all on mental health and mental illness. And while collecting stories from these lemonade-meisters, I discovered twenty authors who didn’t fit into our two editions (nor our upcoming third and fourth volumes) but whose voices needed to be heard.

And so, Lemonade Stand was born (cue The Circle of Life music from The Lion King Nants ingonyama bagithi is the legal amount of lyrics I can use from that song without paying royalties.). This is a limited special edition of i’Mpossible only available in ebook (for now) that will change lives, warm hearts, and refresh the soul.

What’s Up with the Format, Josh?

Good question! Unlike our first two volumes, there are no specific categories. All stories in Lemonade Stand are a maximum of 1000 words, true stories from real people, and about overcoming giant obstacles or big learning moments in life.

So… Where am I Supposed to Start Reading?

Wherever you please … there is no supposed to when reading The i’Mpossible Project series (duh :) ). Read this book any way you please. Start at the end or a chapter with a fun title. Jump around if you want. Bookmark your favorite passages, and definitely pass along these stories to a loved one or a friend.

Can You Wrap up the Chit-Chat, Joshie-Poo?

    1) No-one is allowed to call me Joshie-Poo, and 2) give me a doggone second—I’m trying to end this as gracefully as possible.

Ahem… The twenty storytellers in Lemonade Stand remind us that when life gives you lemons, you don’t just make lemonade … you make lemon meringue pie, lemon chicken, and maybe a lemon drop martini if you can handle your booze.

Ladies, gentlemen, boys, girls, and secret amorphous lizard people … I present to you twenty different flavors of lemonade, so unique you won’t be able to put down your glass (see what I did there?).

When My Story Began: Living with PTSD

    Amanda Wilson.

I’m not really sure when my story began. I’ve been living with my PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) for six years now, but when did my story begin?

Was it when that doctor sat me down in her stuffy office and said, You have PTSD and GAD with OCD tendencies? Or ten minutes later, when even though I was ranked a level-four because I wanted to kill myself, they told me it would be over a year before I could see a counsellor? The wait list was long, but I didn’t have a year to wait. I was ready to die that very day. I wanted to
