Honoré de Balzac
Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Regarded as one of the key figures of French and European literature, Balzac’s realist approach to writing would influence Charles Dickens, Émile Zola, Henry James, Gustave Flaubert, and Karl Marx. With a precocious attitude and fierce intellect, Balzac struggled first in school and then in business before dedicating himself to the pursuit of writing as both an art and a profession. His distinctly industrious work routine—he spent hours each day writing furiously by hand and made extensive edits during the publication process—led to a prodigious output of dozens of novels, stories, plays, and novellas. La Comédie humaine, Balzac’s most famous work, is a sequence of 91 finished and 46 unfinished stories, novels, and essays with which he attempted to realistically and exhaustively portray every aspect of French society during the early-nineteenth century.

The Ball at Sceaux
Translated by Clara Bell
Le Bal de Sceaux was first published in 1830 by Mame and Delaunay-Vallée. In writing this novella Balzac was inspired by the fables of La Fontaine, especially La fille and Héron, and he alludes to La Fontaine in the choice of Émilie’s surname. Other critics have also compared the similarities between Le Bal de Sceaux and Aleksandr Pushkin’s verse novel Eugene Onegin, which was published in serial form between 1825 and 1832.
The novella tells the story of Émilie de Fontaine, who, after haughtily refusing a number of suitors, falls in love with a mysterious young man appearing at the village dance at Sceaux. Despite his refined appearance and aristocratic bearing, the unknown young man never reveals his identity, seeming to be only interested in his sickly sister.
An original illustration
Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. His works and style inspired Balzac to write this novella.
To Henri de Balzac,
his brother Honore.
THE BALL AT SCEAUX
The Comte de Fontaine, head of one of the oldest families in Poitou, had served the Bourbon cause with intelligence and bravery during the war in La Vendee against the Republic. After having escaped all the dangers which threatened the royalist leaders during this stormy period of modern history, he was wont to say in jest, "I am one of the men who gave themselves to
