Chapter One Something Different
Broken eggs were scattered on the kitchen floor. Mom would shout when she saw them. She would be upset that food had been wasted, and then she would complain about having to go to the supermarket for a second time in the day to replace them. Finally, Mom would clean them up, and I would

.
I am Berna, the girl who would watch Mom clean up the mess that I created. I didn't drop the eggs on the floor to be a brat. I did it unintentionally, but I didn’t think I could pass it off as an accident. I was controlling the eggs with my mind, levitating them in the air, until I dropped them on the floor. Why would I do something like that? Because I could, and, as I had learned growing up, other people couldn’t. I only dropped the eggs when I scared myself. My powers scared me at times, but I could move things with my mind if I concentrated. If I wanted, I could have cooked the eggs on the floor, but that would have been harder to

How could I do these things? I didn’t know. I had known I was special ever since the time I had wanted a doll at the playground and used my mind to put it in my bag. Mom and Dad had found it, so I demonstrated what I was capable of, levitating it into the air while I watched their eyes grow wide with horror. They made me swear never to do it again or tell another human being what I was capable of. As I grew older, my powers grew. I could feel it inside of me, filling each vein and artery as I matured.
As I grew older, my parents were keeping secrets too. Secrets were at the core of our family.
I didn’t know how, but I always got what I wanted. I overheard Mom and Dad talking about me in hushed tones, about how it wasn’t normal for me to have these types of skills, as they had none and knew of no one else who had any. They thought I was asleep, but I overheard them. I was worried about being different, but when that emotion subsided, I realized my powers made me special.
On the outside, I tried hard to blend into the normal world
