About this series
“Death had never felt so close.”
The Age of Prohibition has made David Kelly and his family business into the largest and strongest crime outfit in the whole of New York. David, now an old man, rules the family with a paranoid eye, watching their every move. His tyranny has driven his wife Sarah into reclusion and his son Patrick into the heart of his criminal empire, while his youngest son Gordon wilts through ill health.
But with Franklin D. Roosevelt threatening to overturn Prohibition, David finally realises his business has to change. With one shot at the Governorship of New York, he could rule the whole state for generations.
But with betrayal coming from every turn and the reappearance of a family member he thought dead, the fall is coming.
And the fall will be hard…

“We can be kings of this city!” It’s 1892 and David Kelly has arrived in New York fresh off the boat from Ireland. The family take up accommodation in the poverty-stricken neighbourhood of Hell’s Kitchen. In a place where every penny counts, David is forced out to find any work he can. By chance, he runs into a second-generation Jewish immigrant, Ben Portnoy. Ben soon teaches David the dark arts of rolling drunks and pickpocketing. David then finds himself falling into the underworld of New York as he begins smuggling and Ben’s grand plans take him into a world of theft, gang warfare, and eventually murder. His sudden rise is tempered only by the undying love he has for Ben’s sister Sarah. But when their operations gain the wrong sort of attention, David has to fight for his life as men far more powerful than him set his friends and Sarah in their targets. How much is David willing to give to take the throne of the New York underworld?

“I’m not guilty.” It’s 1907 and David Kelly is in the throes of opium addiction. Like thousands of other New Yorkers, he whiles away his days in the embrace of the opium pipe. Only a sudden attack on his hideout and the intervention of his best friend Ben Portnoy saves him from losing himself forever. Determined to fulfil his ambitions of ruling New York, David joins the most powerful Irish gang in the city, the Hudson Dusters. But his activities put him in direct conflict with Ben’s own gang and men far more powerful than himself. With their friendship strained and the return of the love of his life, Sarah Portnoy, David doesn’t know how he’s going to balance his friends, his ambitions, and his love. Just one fateful decision will set David on a course from which there’s no turning back.
