    Chapter 1

Caroline closes her eyes. She takes the deep breathes just as Dr. Collins instructed. She had started seeing the psychologist shortly after Jarvis' death. Cynthia had been the one to finally talk her into doing so. At first, Caroline hated the idea of having to see a therapist, but after a couple of months even she couldn't deny the difference it was making. Dr. Collins was worth every penny and never made her feel rushed in to having some breakthrough she wasn't ready for. When Caroline came in earlier than her scheduled time, Dr. Collins saw her without questions. The gesture was part of her job, but one couldn't tell. She treated Caroline like a dear friend who was always welcome and still maintained the necessary level of professionalism. Caroline trusted her implicitly.

Envision yourself sitting peacefully in your safe space. Focus on the tranquility you feel and just breath. In through her nose and out through her mouth. Repeat.

Dr. Collins soothing voice gently instructed Caroline on how to find her inner peace. Caroline could feel her anxiety dissipating. Her thoughts slowed until she could decipher each one on its own merit. For the last couple of days, she'd had a hard time collecting herself. So much was changing around and within her that she didn't know how to respond to it all. It started with the interview for Ethan Gregory.  Caroline was proud that it had gone well, but she wasn't prepared for the other things she'd felt. Namely, Caroline wasn't sure how to face her attraction to Ethan.

She hadn't been seriously attracted to anyone since Jarvis' death. Sure, she'd gone out on a few dates once the dust settled, but it wasn't because she was actually seeking a new partner. The dates had mostly been blind dates, and setups that her mother and friends would send her on. Everyone was trying to make her feel better about her husband's early departure. Instead, it only made her feel worse. None of the men had sparked even the slightest amount of interest or chemistry within her. Suddenly, Ethan Gregory had done both.

The soft breeze of her breath pushing past her lips helped her to clear her head. Since she'd taken the interview with Ethan Gregory, her mind had been in a state of chaos. All of her thoughts rushed at her at once. She'd start her first day in less than a week and she had to get them under control if she was going to make it there.

I want you to tell me about the interview. What was it like venturing out into the work force? Start when you are ready.

It was... okay. Nerve wrecking at first. I wasn't sure that I could really get out there, but when it came time for the interview it felt...right. I walked into his office and I was okay.

Was there something in particular that made you feel okay?

I don't know. Maybe. His office was really lavish. It looked like something out of one of those home decor magazines, and he was nice. He was kind of nice. I could tell that he is the type of boss that expects perfection. That makes me a little scared.

Are you afraid that his standards might be higher than you can accomplish?

I don't know. I haven't gotten that far. I just think he will be interesting to work for and maybe...

Caroline stopped short. She wasn't ready to admit to her shrink that she was questioned whether the chemistry she felt was mutual. Ethan seemed interested, but then again how would she know.

Maybe what Caroline? It's important that you follow the thought through.

I don't know really. There seemed to be something between us. I feel like working for Ethan will force me to face my fears about starting over and won't allow me any room for excuses.

    Are you ready for that?

Caroline thought for a minute. The question was a legitimate one. This wasn't the first time she'd decided she was ready to join the real world again. There was something different about this time though and Caroline figured it had to do with Ethan. She wasn't sure what he would bring to the table of her recovery, but she liked the strength she felt around him. It reminded her that once, she was more than the shell of a woman she felt like she was now. If just a few minutes with him could do that, then a few hours would work wonders.

    Yes. I'm ready.

Caroline finished up her session with Dr. Collins and the arranged to meet at her usual time next week. Since the position with Ethan's company was part time, she wouldn't have to alter her schedule much. It helped that Dr. Collins office was only a few short blocks from Ethan Gregory's. If she found herself overwhelmed by her new work, she could come right over and not miss a beat. Knowing that brought her a certain measure of comfort. She wouldn't try to push herself to hard too fast, but she knew it was finally time for her learn to live in spite of her husband’s death. It would be a slow and continuous process, but Caroline was finally ready to face the life ahead.

    ***

Caroline got to her car just as her cell phone began to vibrate in her purse. She dug inside the bag hoping to quickly pull the phone out, but of course not. Caroline ended up dumping the contents of her four year old purse on the seat of her car. She grabbed the phone from the pile and scrambled to answer it.

    Hello? Hello?

    Hey honey bun!

Hey Cyn. How are you big sis?

I'm fine darling. How about you? Feeling a little better after seeing Dr. Collins?

Yes, much better. I still have some reservations about how all of this is going to work out, but I think I'll be okay.

That's awesome. A few reservations are to be expected. Even if this wasn't such a huge step for you, starting a new job can be stressful. So in honor of your leap back into the world, I have a surprise for you.

Oh my goodness, Cynthia. What did you do?

Hey, Hey. Don't take tone with me. You're going to love it. I'm running into the bank so I'm going to hang up with you, but I'll text you some instructions. Just do what I say, and we are going to have a great time alright?

Cynthia, you know I hate surprises.

    "So the record reflects.
