There it was! The early morning sun shone brightly off the puddles of fresh fallen rain which were scattered around the ancient temple and on its steps. Charles stared in awe at the timeworn Maya structure which rose majestically out of the jungle growth like a ship rising above the green waves of a windswept sea.

The Temple of Haahil! Charles whispered in reverence as his eyes hungrily took in the structure. Rising some sixty feet above the ground, it was a squat, squarish temple, with intricately carved figures rising in rows on each corner, and short stone steps leading to its flat top. It was made completely of stone, which had been handcrafted so skillfully that a knife blade could not be thrust into the cracks between them. The temple was not overly large, as Central American temples go. But it also seemed to be in better shape than many of them Charles had seen. Indeed, it was so well preserved that he would not have been surprised to see a native pop his head over the top of the structure, to glare at him for disturbing sacred ground.

What a sight! Charles mumbled as he started forward toward the sacred steps. He smiled at the lion-head carvings on the corners, snarling their angry warnings at him to stay away from their holy structure. Those old stone carvers had a great skill at creating images that inspired fear. But of course Charles was not afraid. He felt none of the jitters that the natives in this remote jungle of Belize had displayed when he had finally been able to weedle out of them that this place existed, and then to coax from them how to find the jungle path
