About this ebook

Longing looks, one kiss and one dance are all Snyder and Joel have ever shared, but that's about to change.
As Thanksgiving looms, Snyder is still brooding over a bad ex. He isn't looking forward to the holidays, but Joel is just the man to cheer him up.
The fun, easygoing Joel wants more than to improve Snyder's mood though. They might be opposites, but Joel wants the smart, sexy Snyder for himself even if he is a little too serious.
With the two of them stuck in a mountain cabin alone together, Joel could finally get his chance. If he can draw out the introverted Snyder, it might end up being a happy Thanksgiving just for two.

    Chapter 1

Driving up the mountain roads, Joel took a few wrong turns in the darkness of the early morning hours, but eventually he saw the sign for Brennerman Lodge. He parked and found himself looking at a whole lot of green. That was the same thick pine forest he had been driving through for what seemed like forever.

Brennerman Lodge was an imposing, all wood building. That's where Joel was meeting up with his friends so they could continue on to Gabe's uncle's cabin together. They were spending Thanksgiving with some of their friends at the cabin.

Gabe had been a good friend since the start of college when he took Joel under his wing during his heady, freshman year. Now he was going to Denmark on a special study abroad program. Joel was going to miss him and so were all their mutual friends.

That's why Gabe organized this special Thanksgiving and put Joel in charge of making the turkey. The turkey was in a cooler in the trunk of Joel's car along with a bunch of other ingredients. He might have brought more than he needed, but it wasn't like he could pick up any groceries once they got to the cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Joel bundled up as he turned the engine off and got out of the car, but that didn't save him one bit. Instantly he was freezing. He couldn't believe how cold it was up here in the mountains. He jogged inside the Brennerman Lodge and Grill entrance then stopped as the door closed behind him.

It was warm here and it smelled nice and smoky. Joel looked around and spotted Gabe and Snyder in one of the booths. Gabe spotted him too and waved, but Snyder only eyed him over the rim of a cup with something steamy in it.

For a minute, Joel stood just inside the entrance. He was lost in his admiration of Snyder's dark, unsmiling eyes. Why did he have a crush on a guy who never smiled? Joel was hopeless, but he couldn't resist dark eyes, a pouty mouth, not to mention that ass of his.

All last year at school, Joel didn't know if Snyder was gay or maybe bi or straight. With his pretty eyes, his long eyelashes and that great body, it would be a shame if he was straight.

Joel hoped he wasn't, but he wasn't sure until last New Year's when it struck midnight. But even then Snyder wasn't ready to come out yet. He only started telling people he was gay at the start of this term. That's when Gabe took him under his wing just like he did with Joel.

Joel and Snyder weren't friends though, but maybe they could get to know each other better over Thanksgiving at the cabin. There wouldn't be much else to do up there. Joel hoped he wouldn't make a fool of himself. Just looking at Snyder filled him with painful longing. Who knew what he might do.

While Joel stood there mesmerized by Snyder, he loosened his scarf and unzipped his puffy jacket. Taking a deep breath, he told himself to act normal. He went over to join the two of them and sat down next to Gabe, who gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Glad you made it, he said.

Me too, Joel said then he stared at Snyder to see if he might say he was happy to see him as well. Snyder only nodded in greeting and Joel sighed. At least Snyder looked really handsome doing it.

Still chilled from that short walk from his car, Joel wanted something to warm him up. With obvious envy, he looked at their cups. Gabe was having a hot cider that smelled very spicy, while Snyder was guzzling down a boring ol' black coffee.

Noticing how he was eyeing his drink, Gabe told him, You have time to order one for yourself. Mike and Evan aren't going to be arriving for a while. They had a flat. If they don't get it fixed, Janice and Riley will pick them up on the way here.

And I thought I had trouble getting here just because I took the wrong turn once or twice, Joel said and signaled to a waiter that he wanted what Gabe was having.

It's a good thing you'll be following me up to the cabin. You would get lost for sure. Days later they would find you wandering in the woods, half starved, wearing only rags, Gabe said and gave Joel a pitying shake of his head.

In this weather, they would find my frozen carcass in the spring after the snow melted, Joel corrected him.

You expecting snow? Snyder said like he thought that was impossible.

It snows here in November all the time, Gabe told him.

That would be cool, Joel said just as his hot cider arrived. He practically lunged for it and wrapped his chilled hands around the hot mug. Closing his eyes, he inhaled the warm spiciness. Heaven.

Snow is not cool if you have to drive in it, Gabe told him. Once you get up into the mountain, it's all these narrow, dirt roads. Once it starts snowing they pretty much get obliterated. Then people get lost, drive off the road and get stuck in a ditch or something, Gabe said while looking sharply at Joel for some reason. Was this hapless driver supposed to be Joel?

Good thing we have you as our guide, Joel said as he enjoyed his cider. He wasn't too worried, but then he thought about the turkey in the cooler in the trunk of his car. We'll need to get going pretty soon. I have to start the turkey. So what's the plan?

We have to wait for everyone else, Gabe said. He did some texting and frowned. More than an hour away.

But the turkey, Joel told him. With the waiting here plus the drive up there, there's no way the turkey will get done in time. What if you give me the key to the cabin and I go up ahead of you guys to get dinner started?

What were we just saying about your frozen carcass in the woods? Gabe asked him. You can't go up there by yourself. You, and more importantly the turkey, would get lost.

I'm not that bad. I have the map and GPS and I'll be full of hot cider. I can do it, Joel insisted.

Only if Snyder goes with you, Gabe said.

You know the way? Joel asked Snyder, who shook his head. Joel now looked at Gabe to explain himself.

He isn't your guide. We're using the buddy system, Gabe said. If you get lost, it's better if it's the two of you. You might need someone to dig you out of the snow. Cell phone reception is iffy up there. You might not be able to call for help until you get to the cabin. It has a pretty reliable landline.

Again with the snow, Snyder said.

Forecast said it might snow. I was hoping we would be up there before it started, Gabe said. He then stared hard at Joel and grumbled. He shook his head. Even with the buddy system, it's too risky. I really think you should wait until everyone gets here.

Key, please, Joel said stubbornly and put out his hand. He was finishing the last of his cider and he was ready to go.

Reluctantly, Gabe handed over the key to the cabin and the shed, and Joel put some money down for his drink and a tip. As he got up to go, Snyder got up as well. I guess I'm off too.

Joel was kind of surprised that he was agreeing to come along, but it also gave him a thrill. He had never been alone with Snyder before. This was a great opportunity for Joel to torture himself by spending time with a guy he had a secret crush on who wanted nothing to do with him.

Good luck, you guys. Text me with updates and if you have any questions, Gabe called out as they headed for the door.

Joel bundled up again before he stepped out, but Snyder stepped right outside ahead of him. When Joel caught up with him in front of the lodge, he saw that he was only now buttoning his jacket. Damn, he looked hot with the wind stirring his dark hair, but he was probably freezing. The wind was already making Joel's teeth chatter. Bet that wasn't an attractive look.

I'm over here, Joel said and pointed the way to his Honda. As Joel jogged to his car, he suddenly came to a stop.

What? Snyder asked as he stopped next to him.

Joel pointed up then put out his hand. Fat snowflakes fluttered out of a gray, morning sky. One landed on the palm of Joel's hand. The rest lazily made their way toward the ground.

Snow for Thanksgiving. I can live with that, Joel said and tilted his head up so snowflakes could land on his upturned face. He closed his eyes and felt a few of them. One landed on his lips so he stuck his tongue out to catch another.

Next to him Snyder cleared his throat and shuffled his feet. He wouldn't meet Joel's eyes as he spoke. I thought you were in a hurry, Snyder said.

He sounded funny so Joel turned to stare at him. As Joel watched him, Snyder's eyes followed the course of the snowflakes coming down. God his eyes were beautiful. Catching Joel staring at him and smiling, Snyder narrowed his eyes.

You might not want to admit it, but you have the eyes of a kid on snow day, Joel told him.

I don't know what you're talking about, Snyder said evenly as they climbed into Joel's car and shivered from sudden contact with ice cold car seats.

Joel quickly turned the car on to get the heat going. He rubbed his hands together and put them in front of the vents to warm them up. OK. You navigate. The GPS barely got me here, and it won't do us any good the rest of the way. That's what Gabe had told him. It was the reason they met up at the
