About the Author
Preface
In today’s technologically advanced world, individuals seeking employment must take stock regarding their brand.
My brand, you may ask? Yes. Whether you’re aware of it or not, every picture, every email, every Tweet, every Pin, every chat, your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Snapchat, Linked In, Google+, and Instagram profiles are kept locked in time in the fluid digital landscape that is the Internet. If it was put out into cyberspace, it can be found- one way or another. All of this, compiled together create your brand.
Savvy employers are reviewing this data; they mine social media sites to see what applicants or candidates do in their spare time.
If you were wasted at the last Zac Brown, Brad Paisley, Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Rolling Stones, Metallica, Jesse Cook, Green Day, Blake Shelton, or Beyonce concert and well-meaning friends wanted to memorialize the fun you were having, chances are good you were tagged and now appear looking far less professional than you’d like to in front of a prospective employer.
One of the memes written in conjunction with my 2nd book, The Straightforward Internet is: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the Internet: Anyone Can Say Anything. Take that further to say, budding photographers everywhere think nothing of preserving your privacy. Never mind TMZ, there are enough amateur voyeurs to share your personal life with the world.
While it’s true that once it’s in cyberspace it remains there, you can take a few steps to make it more difficult for your next boss to see you at your worst. Clean up these social media sites so they reflect you in the most positive light. I’m not saying they won’t uncover what you’d rather hide but you can help yourself, so it will take more work on their part to find out you can be a party animal.
This book also covers interviewing for those over 40, 50, 60 and beyond. These folks may or may not participate on a variety of social platforms; they are less likely to be pictured wasted
or three sheets to the wind.
Their friends (at this point in life) fully understand the implications of documenting their personal activities and are unlikely to do so arbitrarily. So, if you’re one of these folks, don’t worry, this book will have value for you too.
You may be wondering, who am I to write this book? First off, I’m a Baby Boomer so, I’ve been around a while. (For millennials who might think I’m ancient - like their parents or grandparents, know this: as we age, a part of us remains forever 17 or 21 or whatever earlier age was a turning point in our lives.) I still remember the broken heart at 17, the rock concerts I attended, poetry I wrote about love and heartache, misdeeds in high school, rebellious actions for which I was grounded,
protesting the Vietnam War, witnessing the tragedy of drug overdoses and feeling the overwhelming helplessness of friends’ suicides. Our life experiences-and the way we respond to them
