Building an Image and a Brand
Image Is Everything
Ask yourself, what is your business about? If you think that your business is about making profits then, ok, you are half right.
If you think about it though, as a salon owner, you are in the business of creating an image for your customer. (You are about creating emotions too, but we'll come on to that a little later).
Yes, image is everything. It's the job of your business to create an individual image for every single customer that walks through the door of your salon. They want to walk out feeling great about their new look. In other words they want you to have provided them with a super positive self-image.
So, if the image of your customer is very important to them, the image they get of your business is super important as well. If the first impression they get of your business does not portray total class and professionalism, why would they trust your salon to create the image they want for themselves?
––––––––
So the very first thing to think about when it comes to increasing your business and profits is the image that your salon portrays to your existing and potential customers.
This may seem like common sense, but it's amazing how few salon owners actually take a long hard look at the image that their business has in the eyes of their clients.
When was the last time that you updated your salon? When was the last time you renewed your signage out front? When was the last time you freshened up and improved the interior?
But isn't all this going to cost me money?
you say.
Well, possibly, but it may not need to be too much money. It may not even need any money. Sometimes it's just a little elbow grease that is needed!
The number of times I have walked past a salon and seen the signs and the windows looking dusty and tired is amazing. A tired looking frontage to your business will portray the image of a tired salon and a tired and lackluster salon owner.
The remedy could be as simple as a bucket of soapy water and a bit of applied effort - or perhaps just a lick of paint!
The same applies to the interior. You don't have to spend a fortune, but making the interior look fresh and spotlessly clean can work wonders to the image you portray to your customers and to how they feel about coming back next time.
It may be the case though that you do actually have to spend some money if your salon actually needs a big revamp.
If you ask that question again: "But isn't all this going to cost me money?" Let me answer by asking you a question right back. What is it going to cost you if you don't spend the money to improve the image of your business? The answer my friend is.....it's going to cost you customers and possibly the loss of your business!
If all you can afford right now is two or three cans of paint, then go for it! Whatever you can do to improve the look and feel of both the inside and outside image of your business, then do it.
If your salon is currently not the most successful in your town or city, then ask yourself why and go take a good long look at the salon that is the most successful right now. What image does it portray from the outside? What image does it portray once you're inside? (You have actually been inside their salon haven't you?) If not, pay a visit as soon as possible. Be their customer for the day and see how their place looks and feels and how you are treated etc. You must know what your competition is up to or how can you beat them if you don't?
The old adage, 'you never get a second chance to create a first impression' has become an old adage for a reason. Because it's true!
Ok. So in terms of image, we have dealt with the interior and exterior image of your salon. Now you must turn to the image of both yourself and your staff. And by this we mean not only how you present yourself and how you look, but also how do you and your staff come across in terms of your attitude to your customers?
Let's deal with how you all look first of all.
The importance of branding your salon cannot be overemphasized, and an important and valuable way of
