    INTRODUCTION

    MONEY IS ONE OF THE prickliest issues that couples fight over, and one of the greatest sources of divisiveness among people in general. And for good reason: Money is essential for survival; not as important as food or shelter, but it is the medium with which one gets food and shelter. Money is intimately connected with one’s sense of security.

    However, security goes much deeper than food and shelter. Providing for one’s family is paramount. However, when a couple marries, there is a great expectation in most cultures that the husband provide for his wife and future children. What that means varies greatly from family to family, and indeed, from culture to culture. While a tent and a goat might suffice in some villages, nothing short of an expensive diamond ring and prenuptial agreement would do in other places.

    Money – and how to manage it – has assumed enormous significance in today’s society. There are still some abroad who still believe that Americans walk on gold-paved streets, but in fact, Americans have to work hard for a living, and some items and services are much more expensive in the United States than elsewhere in the world, such as medical care and education, for example.
