    INTRODUCTION

One thing I do not want to do is scare off anyone who might think that this book is just for the ‘advanced’ believer. Therefore, an obvious place to begin is to explain what I mean by ‘Deeper truths of the Christian life.’ And so the truths in view here are those derived from God’s word to mankind in time, meaning which are from the Bible. Then the word Christian is a word used by God but three times in His word, and refers to those who are followers of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. And we are to see that one becomes one of His followers the moment one comes to know God in a personal relationship through faith in His Son. If what I have just said sounds foreign to you, in the sense that you do not know what I am talking about, then it may be a good idea for you to start the book by reading Addendum B, which deals with one becoming a child of God. So the moment one begins one’s new life with God as a child of His in salvation, then that is the start of the Christian life we have in view in this book.

Then before we can understand what is meant by deeper truths, we are to realize two truths about God’s word. The first is that God has revealed Himself to mankind in a chronological way over time. In other words, God revealed a little truth at the beginning of time and then kept adding more truth as time progressed from the original creation. This means that God revealed all of His word to mankind over a period of 1600 years through over forty different writers so that when we reach the end of the Bible, we have all the truth which God wanted mankind to know of Him during time.

And then as to the second truth, we are to realize that when we read God’s word each day, and keep reading through the Bible, then God goes on to teach us one truth after another relating to our life with Him. That is why God does say to us all, no matter how long we have personally known God, what we read at 1 Peter 2:2, …like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation. Then after we finish reading the Bible once and go on to read it all the way through a second time, and then a third time and so on, then God goes deeper with us, by building upon the truth which He taught us when we read His word through the first time! Therefore, that is what is meant by Deeper truths of the Christian life. The way God goes deeper with us is by means of His word, read in sequential order, as He has presented it to us. In other words, we cannot keep jumping all over the place and expect God to be teaching us anything. We need to start at the beginning and read right through to the end, not jumping over any parts we might find difficult, or which we think have no meaning. Every single word of God’s word to us has meaning, or else it would not be there.

Then as to the deeper truths which are being shared in this book, these are truths which God taught the author over the last 34 years, not only through reading through of God’s word year by year, but also through in-depth Bible studies of important words of the Bible, such as life, death, spirit, soul, body, age, judgment, and so forth; but also through doing a number of commentaries on different books of the Bible, such as Matthew, John, Galatians, James, 1st and 2nd Corinthians, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians; and also through doing over 535 commentaries on different subjects encountered in God’s word. God then had His servant apply what he had been taught by conducting home Bible studies, giving the sermon in a local church over a period of almost five years, and conducting a weekly service in a home for the aged for the last thirteen years. God also led His servant to apply many of these truths in a counseling ministry for the last twenty years. And in having said that, the author knows full well that apart from God’s grace and power, he cannot do anything that will last for time and eternity!

What this means then is that the chapters in this book begin with when we first came to know God, then goes on to deal with our walk with Him while we are here on earth, and includes what awaits us in the our life with God after our present life here on earth ends. Therefore, under God’s direction, I will deal with topics such as what is spiritual maturity; the truth that God has chosen us for Himself in eternity past; our salvation as being in three stages; the shifts which God brings about in our lives to bring us from the baby stage to spiritual maturity; the spiritual awareness that we need in order to be useful vessels in God’s Hand; the kind of Christian life which pleases God; what are some mileage markers of the Christian life so as to know where we are in our personal growth to spiritual maturity; the necessity of believing in the inspiration of God’s word; and then looking at what we can expect to see as we reach the spiritual maturity stage of our Christian life. The book then concludes with an Addendum dealing with such topics as the nature of man and the consequence of sin; what God wants one to know who is not yet a child of God; what the truth is regarding the death of God’s precious Son, Jesus Christ, namely that His death was for all human beings, and not just for those chosen of God; and also what the truth is regarding the sign gifts, namely that they have now all ceased.

It should also be mentioned that a few things have been done differently in this book from the previous books which have been published already. One will not see any bolding for emphasis in this book, only underlining. A second change was to add the Bible quotes as part of the text, instead of apart as before. Feedback from readers on any aspect of this book or any of the other books is always welcome. This can be done through my website shown on the next page.

And before we turn to look at the truths God led His servant to write about, there is one last task which is necessary before bringing this Introduction to a close, which is to let the reader know a little about the author. We are all curious by nature, so a few brief details are here in order. I have had a personal relationship with God for over 34 years now, which is by far the best event that has ever happened in my life! One of my favorite verses is John 5:24, where God’s precious Son, Jesus Christ, tells us that anyone who believes in Him has eternal life, and as a result will never experience God’s judgment, but such a one has passed out of death into life.

After completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in project engineering in the corporate offices of a large utility, God called His servant as an evangelist in early 1999, then sent him out over 2000 miles away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, and where His servant has been and is still serving Him.

The author was widowed in 1994, his one and only wife having died of cancer at a young age. When the author married his wife, she herself was a widow of two years, with three children. At the time of our marriage the children were 9, 12, and 15 years old respectively. The author did adopt the children, who have since gone on to each marry a Christian spouse, and then for each of these couples to have two children each.

One last thing to mention here is that I have established a website for the purpose of interacting with readers, which can be found at:

    http://www.pilgrimpathwaypublications.com

Recently, the author was led of God to establish another website specifically for gospel ministry, since the author is an evangelist. That website can be found at:

    http://www.servantofmosthigh.com

And now my prayer is that God will richly bless you as you read this book, and greatly minister to your every need in your life, as only God can!

GOD WILL NOT STOP MATURING US SPIRITUALLY

UNTIL WE ALL REACH PERFECT CONFORMITY

TO THE IMAGE OF HIS OWN PRECIOUS SON!

    CHAPTER ONE

    _______________________________________

    WHAT IS SPIRITUAL MATURITY?

AND HOW SPIRITUALLY MATURE AM I?

What we will do in this first chapter is discover together what God means by spiritual maturity, so that when we end this chapter we will be able to answer the question, "How spiritually mature am I?

    What is spiritual maturity?

If one does a study of the words mature and maturity in God’s word, one finds that these words refer to ‘having reached its end.’ And so when we encounter these terms in the physical world, we generally know what they mean. For instance, when we speak of ‘mature fruit,’ we know that it is fruit that is fully ripened. Or when the word ‘mature’ is used in relation to a person, we know that the person’s more advanced age is in view. However, when we come to spiritual maturity that is a different matter. And here only what God has revealed to us will be of any help. And one good place to start is the main passage of God’s word dealing with this subject, which is from Hebrew 5:11 to Hebrews 6:3, where God tells us, [5:11] Concerning him (that is, Melchizedek, who was in view in the previous verses) we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. [12] For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. [13] For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. [14] But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. [6:1] Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, [2] of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. [3] And this we will do, if God permits. There are a number of truths to grasp here, the first being our need to notice the mention of an infant at verse 5:13 in contrast with the mature at verse 5:14, with the one partaking only of milk, while the other is on solid food. And here we notice that God is using examples from the physical world to teach us spiritual truth. For mothers especially will be able to identify with the truth that each of their children first went through the infant stage of being only on milk, before progressing to the more advanced stage of growth of being on solid food. And one important point to remember here is that once one has progressed to solid food, then one never goes back to only partaking of milk. And this will also be found to be true in the spiritual realm. We cannot progress from being an infant in the faith to being spiritually mature in any area of our Christian life, and then go back later and live as an infant in the faith in those areas of spiritual maturity which God has brought us to.

And before going on to draw further truth from our passage above, let us go deeper in God’s analogy of the infant and the more mature, and the use of solid food instead of being just on milk, by now looking at what God tells us at 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 concerning these things, [1] I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. [2] I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, [3] for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? What is important to notice here is that we still have infants in Christ in view, who although true believers, yet due to their daily walk are seen to be men of flesh at verse 1 and still fleshly… walking like mere men at verse 3, where they are likened to being as what unbelievers are. And now the mature of Hebrews 5:14 are here seen referred to as spiritual men at 1 Corinthians 3:1, due to their daily walk. Then the very important truth to grasp here about this word spiritual, is that it pertains to one’s walk in the realm of the spirit, having here The Holy Spirit in view! Therefore, we are being told here that the mature are those who are spiritual, that is, those who have learned to walk by The Holy Spirit indwelling in one’s spirit; which is in contrast to the infants in Christ, who although having The Holy Spirit indwelling in their spirit, have not yet learned to walk by Holy Spirit! And as a result are not being taught the word of God by The Holy Spirit, which also means the word is not being applied to one’s
