Part I – Everything You Need to Know About Intermittent Fasting
Chapter 1: The Practice of Fasting
––––––––
Fasting has been one of the most prominent methods of weight loss ever since it was introduced to our history. Up until today, there are a lot of people who prefer using the fasting method to shed some pounds, as they believe it's the best way to lose weight. Some of those who have proven the effectiveness of fasting even call it a life cheat
or a life hack
as it provides the result they desire without any cost at all.
There are, however, several claims that discredit the method and prove contrary to what is said to be its effect. Some nutritionists say that fasting is unhealthy and should not be promoted to the public as it can cause nutrition deficiencies and other health-related problems. In spite of this, there are still people who find fasting a great and easy way to lose weight. But, is fasting really just a matter of not eating to reduce body weight?
Fasting, in its purest definition, is the abstinence from consuming foods, drinks, or both for a certain period of time. During the early ages when different religions were still fighting over lands, people, and beliefs, it was not considered a form of diet; but instead, a practice to prove one's faith to the god of whatever religion a man believed. It was more of an obedience rather than a health-related practice.
Nowadays, fasting is still associated with existing religions and is still regarded as a part of religious practices. In Buddhism, monks and nuns strictly abide by the Vinaya rules. They do not eat after the noon meal and they stick to this practice every day. Under Christianity, the practice of fasting is linked to the passages expressly written in the biblical Book of Isaiah. In there, fasting is said to be not only a mere abstinence from food or water but also a decision to fully obey the god's commands. And in Islam, Muslims believe that aside from food abstinence, the practice of fasting
also entails avoidance of acting and speaking of falsehood.
In the context of physiology and health, fasting refers simply to a person's metabolic status when he has not eaten overnight. It's the metabolic state after a person achieves full digestion and absorption of meal. It usually happens during sleep as this is the phase when the body doesn't receive anything and thus, is focused only on full digestion. From this very description, we can say that fasting is not just one of the thousands of methods of losing weight. It's actually a normal phenomenon that happens to every person, every day.
Just like those of any other practice related to health improvement and diet, the effects of fasting differ from person to person, depending on a variety of factors such as a person's age, current medication he is currently taking, his existing health issues if there are any, and his body's response to hunger. Nonetheless, fasting still has proven its own importance in the field of medicine and medical research.
There are distinguished types into which different ways of fasting are usually categorized namely dry fasting, water fasting, diagnostic fast, and intermittent fasting. All of these types use abstinence from either food or water but vary on their purposes.
Absolute Fast
An absolute fast (also known as dry fasting) is the complete abstinence of food and liquid that lasts commonly for 24 hours. This type of fasting can further be extended up to a couple of days. This is usually a practice done for religious purposes.
Water Fast
This type of fasting is almost like an absolute fasting except that it allows the consumption of drinking water
