PART I: OVERVIEW
Introduction
Families are excited when their baby takes her first step or says her first word. Will it be mama
or dada
? At what age will this happen? When does the little child speak sentences and communicate her needs, wants and respond to her parents? There is a great variation in the ages when these language skills develop and appear. Errors in pronunciation are cute in little children and become part of a family's lore. But suppose the errors persist, the child has difficulty with some sounds, the child is slower to speak than some other member of the family, or a friend's child does not have the same problems? Parents want to know the answers to the following questions:
● What is normal speech development?
● Is my child’s speech slow, normal or advanced?
● Is there a problem?
● Will he or she outgrow it?
● What if the problem continues?
● When should a good parent ask for help?
● What resources are available?
Teachers often suggest referrals to parents who are concerned about their child’s progress. This book serves that same purpose. If you are concerned about your child’s speech development, use this book to survey and analyze her pattern of errors and make an informed decision. When in doubt, refer!

How to Use this Book
Parents often have concerns about a particular child's speech development. Use these informal surveys of your child’s speech and auditory perception skills to evaluate her progress. Now you can determine if a child's development is normal, advanced, or slow for her age. Most importantly, if your child has difficulties, you will be referred to the school speech/language specialist and the study team for professional evaluation. However, if you identify a few sounds which normally cause difficulty at her age, help her using the appropriate suggestions listed below.
