A Guide to Understanding your Pet’s Healthcare
This book primarily covers pet healthcare for dogs and cats and is essentially a compilation of some of the many health issues affecting pets. From the book you will learn how to care for your pet, how to communicate effectively with your veterinarian about your pet, develop a basis for understanding the standard of care provided to your pet, and allow you as the pet owner to take more initiative or a stronger role in offering your pet the best healthcare available. Ideally, this book is for pet owners (owners of dogs and cats) who want to take a more active role in caring for their pets or just want to have a general understanding of what is involved. Students in middle school, high school, or college, who want to pursue a career in the veterinary field including those aspiring to be veterinary technicians, or young veterinarians in small animal medicine, should read this book.
Pet healthcare is a complicated issue with many areas that need improvement. One of the biggest areas for improvement is pet owner compliance with acquiring and/or administering preventive medications, treatments, and diagnostics. There are different reasons pet owners may have for not complying with preventive pet healthcare. These generally fall under one of the following categories:
Affordability – they are unable to fit it in their current budget
Cost Benefit – they do not think it is worth the cost especially when they compare to human healthcare offset by health insurance.
They have a personal believe that conflicts with the veterinarian’s expert recommendation. That is, they do not believe it is needed or necessary.
They trust another source of information more than the veterinarian (sometimes online information for better or worse)
They trust their own instinct or knowledge more than the veterinarian’s expertise
They do not have the time to administer routine medications
They forget to administer routine medications
Some of the reasons for not complying with preventive treatment are also, why some pet owners decline certain recommended diagnostics testing and even certain doctor recommended treatments even when their ill pet is at the veterinary hospital. Some owners may choose to do short term treatments for illnesses and ignore the more long-term solutions that aim to treat the root cause(s) of the problem.
Below, you will see primary pet healthcare information presented in a topic format and covering mostly preventive healthcare care, diagnostics, and general veterinary recommendations for pet care. Some topics are covered in more detail than other topics, but overall the information ranges from beginner to intermediate levels as far as the technical content. We explore some of the worst threats to your pet’s health and things you can do to lower their risk of getting sick. You will also learn which disease-causing agents are zoonotic, which means that they are communicable between pets and people. As you read further,
