Epigraph
One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it’s expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never stops until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.

About the Author
Foreword
When Fran told me about writing this book, I thought, Who better to provide guidance on how an employee can work at home efficiently?
She was my manager for several years, and she had the insight to see that I was always stressed out by the commute, driving in inclement weather, and constant interruptions while in the office during the day.
Fran asked me if her observations were correct, and I confirmed them. She told me that she did not want to lose me as an employee, and I loved my job—other than the stress, worries and constant interruptions—so we discussed some alternatives.
We assessed the responsibilities of my job and concluded that twenty-four hours of my job each week could be accomplished from home. So we created a schedule for me to work at home three days a week and in the office two days a week. Fran made sure I understood that there might be weeks when that schedule would not be possible, depending on the company’s business issues. The stress I had been feeling eased, knowing that I could telecommute some of the time.
Fran and I met later that day to review some tips and techniques for working at home. First, she told me that working at home was not for everyone. Some people find home to be more distracting than the office. Some people miss the daily socializing in the office and find it difficult to work alone. She also gave me some advice to help me succeed at working from home.
She shared so much that I had to take notes. She told me not to expect that all of her tips would work for me and not to be frustrated if it took a little time to find my groove. The following are just a few of the tips she shared, but there are many more in this book:
• Designate a space in your home in which to work.
• Learn to be a virtual team member.
• Use e-communication effectively.
• Practice stress-relieving techniques when you get frustrated.
• Prioritize your day/week.
• Take breaks.
• Create time boundaries.
• Laugh.
We agreed to a thirty-day trial to see if the new schedule would work for me and for the company. If it did work, there would be a small investment, at my expense, to implement a few more of the tips she shared. It worked! I made the investment of three hundred dollars and became even more productive.
Soon after my new schedule was working well, some of the other employees became jealous and thought it was not fair that I could work from home three days a week and others could not. Fran explained to them that many job responsibilities cannot be done outside of the office. She met with those employees as she had with me. Some employees worked out alternative schedules, and it was not possible for others.
Fran is a great leader and mentor. She helped me and allowed me to find better balance in my life and to become an even more valuable contributor to the company. I know by reading this book that Dr. Fran
can help.
I asked Fran how she accomplishes so much and still keeps it together.
I work from home as often as I can,
she said.

Preface
My inspiration for this book was twofold. The first was my strong sense of empathy and concern for the well-being and success of those individuals who supported me in the corporate offices of well-known Fortune 100 companies. The second inspirational nugget is of a slightly more selfish nature, but it’s sincerely truthful—working from home preserved my sanity. Moreover, two previous managers, Sandy Shaw and Randy Harris, helped nurture my pro–alternative-work-arrangement spirit, because they also understood the relevance of these concepts and mentored me to be productive and in control of my surroundings.
Most employees don’t come to work every day wondering how they can make it a horrible or difficult day. Not only do most people want to be successful in their daily endeavors, but I also believe that most people feel a certain type of positive energy when they have some control over their work environments. This is a reward that an employee can reap by working from a home office. The percentage of employees who reported that their jobs were very or extremely stressful has doubled in a decade (from 40 percent in 1994 to 80 percent in 2001).
Despite rapid advances in technology that allow people to conduct international business, commonly from a small work space in a corporate building, only a small percentage of employees in jobs suitable for working remotely (from home) are actually working from home. It does take discipline to work under the same roof in which you live. However, I have learned through my own personal experience and through the experiences of others that, if you can do it right, working remotely from your own home office can be highly rewarding. And you can keep your job, too.
Some people find that there are a hundred things to do around the house before they begin their work for pay. Some find the seclusion depressing,
