If being around you is a positive experience for your dog and she connects it with her name, she will come when you call her. This pet owner got an instant result, but he was teaching his German Shepherd the wrong lesson. The lesson taught was to fear him. Sometimes owners confuse respect with fear.

I would like to thank everyone who taught me what I didn’t know about dogs, including my customers (the dogs and their owners).
I am so thankful to my cousin Jose Puentes for always being a phone call away to share in my excitement during the production of this book.
Many thanks to Alberto Lopez from Laycomp Graphics for proving that there really are no problems, but only solutions; your creativity is out of this world. To Natasha Popova and Bouhda, the model and her dog on the cover. Thank you for being as beautiful inside as you are on the outside; my daughters will never forget that. The time and patience you and your dog donated to the making of this book were invaluable. Photographer Lynn Parks, your professional contributions during the photo shoots were second to none. (It was a first time for both of us, Lynn.)
Being the youngest in the family, I have my two big brothers to be thankful for—Guillermo and Argelio—you taught me much more than the six lessons in this book. And thanks, mom and dad. You are the most hard-working, courageous, loving parents who could have brought me into this world. You instilled those same attributes in me and gave me the confidence to take the steps necessary to both succeed in my career and write this book. Without you, this book would never have been possible.
My life has changed so much for the better since I met my wife. As I write these words, our tenth anniversary is just a couple of days away. At some point during our first year of marriage, I asked you to help me decide which type of business I should pursue—selling how-to manuals or training dogs. God knows I’m glad you said, Without a doubt, dog training.
What’s ironic is that out of all of that dog training came this how-to manual. Happy tenth anniversary to you, Regina M. Puentes.
A cautionary note on aggressive dogs
I urge you not to attempt any of the training or techniques in this book on any aggressive dog. Aggression is a serious problem that should be dealt with immediately by a professional dog trainer experienced in dealing with aggressive dogs.
Introduction
One of the things I’ve noticed throughout my career as a dog trainer is that some pet owners have a problem with the idea of actually training their own dogs. As a result, they procrastinate until the point when the puppy of their dreams has grown to be a giant, one hundred eighty-pound nightmare—for some, a fifty-pound disadvantage. If and when they finally do start the training process, they become easily frustrated and feel that it’s just not working. At times the dog gets the blame for supposedly being a stupid dog, when in fact he may be a stubborn dog that will eventually learn, but not without naturally resisting in the beginning. Eventually, the owner becomes discouraged and slams the dog-training book closed to the point of no return. Then they turn to quick-fix gadgets and fads; some seem humane but aren’t, and others are clearly cruel.
In short, owners become impatient. They don’t give their dogs enough time to learn. Perhaps even more important, they don’t give themselves enough time to learn.
That’s why Who’s Training Whom? is a self-help book as much as it is a dog-training manual. This book will caution you about the specific moments when most people fall short of training their dogs—those moments when you probably feel like giving up most. Who’s Training Whom? will help you work through those moments by giving you the tools you need to train your dog effectively and offering you better alternatives to giving up.
Remember, however, that reading this book alone will not get the job done. Once you’ve done the reading, you’ll have to roll up your sleeves and train your dog the good, old-fashioned way, with a leash and a collar, and ultimately, with patience.
Finally, if you read about something in this book that you just don’t understand, or if you have trouble with a particular training exercise, or even if you just have a question, simply e-mail me at info@k9solutionsinc.com to arrange a phone consultation for a minimal fee.
