    DEDICATION

It is indeed an honor to dedicate this book to no other person, but the man of great altitude Sheik Muhammad Belgore.

    PREFACE

In this book, How To Train Your Soul, the author has painstakingly provided explicit explanation on the objective of spiritual education and how to accomplish it.

The author presents the topics in this book: Firstly, on the basis of the holy Qur’an upon which he relied initially; Secondly, according to the directions of shared common concepts in the sciences of sufi education, with what it encompasses in all depth and profundity, and Thirdly, according to the ability and experience of seeking students.

The manner of presentation of sufi education in this book is comparable to the mode of educational and scientific method of presentation in our modern day. This is so because of the books specialization in both natural science and psychology; segmenting the topics into lessons containing specific sections and inserting various practices which motivates seeking students to participate in practical spiritual exercise. Relevant questions are also provided to encourage students in meditating and researching about the spiritual realm.

This book consists of six sections in the following order: (1) Our Spiritual Life (2) Knowing the Soul (3) Moods of the Soul (4) Purification of the Soul (5) Secrets of the Soul (6) Wonders of the Soul.

The author distributes the curriculum in his book into twenty studies, consisting of fifty five numbered lessons, including the questions and exercises presented at the end of each unit.

    INTRODUCTION

Glory be to God, the Lord of the universe, blessing and peace be upon the most noble of all messengers, his house-hold and all his followers.

God almighty knows that I wish not to publish this book until after serious persuasion from my acquaintances and wide consultation with most of my friends. These people know that I have never stopped visiting Sufi sheikhs and seeking their blessing. They are also aware of my frequent visit to the library of great figures of Sufism, scooping up their spiritual flowage. All these strengthen my associates’ belief that I can produce a book which will lighten the way in spiritual education for a large number of our Muslim youths who are lovers of knowledge and education.

However, I did not see myself as the right person for this work, because spiritual education is best taught by being a model and not by writing and blabbering. The most accomplished model for those who love Allah is Prophet Muhammad [S.A.W] and those who follow him by example. I know with certainty that people of model still exist in all corners of our world. For this reason, I abstained from writing on spiritual education. Instead I prayed to God to make me an epitome that can be exemplified in the present and the future. This abstinence began to disappear when I visited Sheikh Al Harazim, one of the Tijaniya Sheikhs in Kano. I met three Americans with him who were enquiring about facts and sacraments of Sufism. I was amazed and so were others, because we wondered what might have motivated these white men to research and drill our senior Sheikh about the secrets of Sufism. Then I was driven by destiny after two years of this event to Senegal. I visited Imam Hassan bin Cisse and met three American youths who had come to Medinat khaolak for spiritual education and training. I spoke to these young men about Islam and Sufism. I fathomed their mentality and noticed in them great determination and enthusiasm for Islam as well as its spiritual fascination.

There and then, I began to think about what has become of Muslims, the level of decay and crumbling that has become part of them, in the east and in the west. How some heralds became men of knowledge, not men of God, thus, becoming so difficult to reform this graceless situation or to brace up for revolution in Allah’s religion Is it not a great disappointment to see ‘’Men of the west‘’ nowadays, anticipating and trying to get hold of the facts of Sufism and our spiritual life, while at the same time, we see Men of the east’’ denying the grace of Sufism and renouncing its far reaching impacts on Islam. Is it not a great disappointment for us to see Men of the west", trying to outstrip and precede us in spiritual sciences just like they left us behind before, in natural sciences? This, by God, is a serious matter!

These made me rush into writing, even when I know that
