About this ebook

My undergraduate training has been in the field of Physical Therapy, but like many of you I have beenparticipating in the school of life much longer! As you incorporate the basic techniques included in this book into whatever your current healing practice is, hopefully you too will experience the reward and joy of watching people change and heal themselves as I have.

Following are the basic principles that have emerged for me through the years:

Our bodies are all one piece, and what affects any part of it affects the whole.
All layers of the body must be released to allow for full release of the whole body.
As parts of the body release and physical mobility changes, mental and emotional agility increases
To maintain these changes, the central nervous system has to realize the new possibilities for movement and incorporate them into natural motor patterns.
To maintain the physical changes and new natural motor patterns, the energetic body must change to reflect the physical changes.
As parts of the body release, energy releases and flows more freely throughout the entire body.
As energy releases, memories emerge for integration into consciousness and subsequent healing of past traumas.
As physical and energetic changes occur, belief systems shift.
As individuals belief systems shift, societal paradigms shift.

This is a wholistic model that I am calling MultiDimensional HealingCome join me on this exciting journey of discovering your unlimited potential for facilitating healing for yourself, your clients, your community, the world!

    Preface:

    Following the Path

My formal education and licensure is in the field of Physical Therapy. I was one of those fortunate youngsters who had an experience in high school that led me to know exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up! In my sophomore year I observed physical therapists at the Curative Workshop outpatient facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jenny Brassier, RPT took me under her wing and led me through a day that shaped the rest of my life. (Watch for those days, they’ll come camouflaged as plain old days, and then one day you’ll value them as turning points on your path.)

Upon high school graduation, my choice of college was easy-at that time physical therapy schools were somewhat rare. I chose University of Wisconsin-Madison and four years later had earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Medicine. After several internships, I received a certificate of Physical Therapy and sat for the Wisconsin state licensure board examinations. Although this part of my education was the basis for things to come, the physical therapy I perform today would have been hardly recognizable in those times.

I proceeded to work in several different specialties with my Physical Therapy (P.T.) degree. I worked for years in a general hospital setting, when P.T.’s performed respiratory therapy functions, burn/wound care hydrotherapy and cardiac rehabilitation, as well as basic orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation. Many of the now commonplace surgeries were new innovations then. I can still remember observing my first joint replacement operation. University of Wisconsin P.T. school was at the leading edge of neurological rehabilitation-including the groundbreaking work of the Bobaths, Rood, and Voss’s Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, making stroke and spinal cord patient rehabilitation extremely fascinating. In my first job, I even had opportunity to join forces with the innovative surgeons at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee that were performing their very first open heart surgeries. They believed physical rehabilitation should begin immediately post-op with deep breathing and coughing in the Intensive Care Unit, and that a patient have a solid comprehension of how to exercise independently before even leaving hospital-perhaps an old fashioned idea, but a good one.

My cardiac specialty led me to teaching Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes-and I discovered how much I really enjoyed teaching. When I semi-retired from P.T. to give birth to my babies, I trained and taught Lamaze Classes under the auspices of ASPO/Lamaze. In retrospect, not only was the teaching experience invaluable, but it laid the groundwork for learning/teaching conscious relaxation, deep breathing, guided visualization techniques and clinical hypnosis.

As my children grew, a desire to work on the ‘school calendar’ led me to train/work in pediatric physical therapy. I loved working with kids, but had to learn patience and frequently relied on my instincts with the non-verbal children. I realized that learning to follow these instincts was extremely helpful when I began training in and using myofascial release techniques, especially when unwinding procedures allowed somato-emotional releasing. (This process will be discussed in detail in the chapters of this book.)

Using myofascial release and craniosacral therapy became the focus of my further training and I expanded to using it not only in pediatric populations, but also with general outpatient orthopedic/chronic pain patients. In the 1990’s, this work began to include horses, and over several years Doris Kay Halstead and I developed a program called Symmetry in Motion.¹ Traveling around the United States visiting horse farms to posturally re-align horses and their riders, we honed our skills not only in deep tissue bodywork and craniosacral therapy, but also in working with the energy body to facilitate healing of the physical body. As I observed the results of this work, it began to shift my entire belief system about pain and healing. I began to think about physical therapy much more wholistically, understanding that we must address and make changes in the entire body and at all levels for true healing to occur.

So I have come to this point-certainly not an end point-but the point at which I feel like I’ve put enough of the pieces together so that I can share the specialty of Physical Therapy as I practice it today. It’s no longer physical therapy, it’s beyond physical and it’s beyond physical therapy… . It’s MetaPhysical Therapy.

And why is my story so important? In the whole scheme of things it’s not. But when we look back on our life path, it’s fascinating to observe that everything happened for a reason. Even the crises and challenges contribute valuable learning experiences. As Deepak Chopra so aptly puts it, every thought is the result of every other thought we have ever had…²

    Introduction:

    Wholistic Model of MultiDimensional Healing

When training in myofascial release therapy, I learned about the ‘layers’ of fascia, otherwise known as connective tissue, in the body. The deepest layer is at the core of our body, the dural membranes surrounding and encasing the brain and spinal cord. The intermediate layer is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports our internal organs, bones, nerves, and blood vessels and is an integral part of our muscles, ligaments and tendons. The superficial layer encases our body right under the skin like a suit of long underwear. All these layers are weblike, interspersed and interdependent, and determine our shape and postural alignment. Because the body’s energy flows through the fascia, when memory of trauma or injury is energetically stored in areas of fascial restriction, the normal energetic flow is blocked, causing ‘dis-ease’. Release of the fascial restrictions releases the memory, energy flows, and healing is facilitated. (This is all covered in detail in the chapters of this book.)

From this simple premise, I began an incredible journey. Following are some basic principles that have emerged for me that I would like to share:

    1.  Our bodies are all one piece, and what affects any part of it affects the whole.

    2.  All layers of the body must be addressed to allow for full release of the whole body.

    3.  As parts of the body release and physical mobility changes, mental and emotional agility increases.

    4.  To maintain these changes, the central nervous system has to realize the new possibilities for movement and incorporate them into natural motor patterns.

    5.  To maintain the physical changes and new natural motor patterns, the energetic body must change to reflect the physical changes.

    6.  As parts of the body release, energy releases and flows more freely throughout the entire body.

    7.  As energy releases, memories emerge for integration into consciousness and subsequent healing of past traumas.

    8.  As physical and energetic healing occurs, belief systems shift.

    9.  As individual’s belief systems shift, societal paradigms shift.

This is a wholistic model that I am calling MultiDimensional Healing. We are gradually embracing a new paradigm of medicine called complimentary or integrative medicine. I see the human being’s physical body as a mere shell without its’ energetic component or spiritual essence, like a copper wire without a current running through it. In fact, when there’s nothing electronically going on in a physical body, the medical term for this is death. In the new medical paradigm, we are simply adding information about this ‘energetic component’ and ‘spiritual essence’ to the body of knowledge called allotropic medicine, bringing with it added dimensions of healing and wholeness. MultiDimensional Healing is a healing of body, mind, and spirit, for the individual, the medical establishment, and ultimately the planet. Healing from the inside out, and further out, holographically affecting all that is.

A very wise chaplain for a hospice organization once explained to me how important it was to ‘meet with someone wherever they are’. Sitting with a client in hospice or performing healing techniques in clinic will be most helpful for both practitioner and client when they meet on ‘common ground’. In other words, a person’s existing belief system will be the extent of what they are able to hear and respond to. Think of the levels of healing as increasing frequencies of vibration, the physical being lower frequency through to the energetic which is higher. If a person is going to heal at a higher frequency of vibration, he/she must believe that this is a possibility. For example, if the belief is that a medication is necessary to heal the affliction, then a medication will be required to do so. If the belief is that ‘stretching and exercise’ is required to make the pain go away, then that will be the case. If the belief is a need to have the energy flow corrected through the body to facilitate healing, then acupuncture or other energy techniques will be sought by that patient. This brings up three important points.

First is the importance of patient education. Explanations of the techniques, in language they can understand, will increase their awareness and may widen their belief systems. An effort has been made to make the explanations in this book ‘user friendly’ for patients.

Second, a valuable part of the patient assessment
