    Introduction

The Layers is a poem by distinguished twentieth-century American poet Stanley Kunitz. It was first published in the American Poetry Review and was reprinted in The Poems of Stanley Kunitz, 1928–1978 (1979). The poem is also available in Kunitz's Passing Through: The Later Poems, New and Selected (1995). The Layers was the last poem he wrote for the 1979 collection; he intended it to be a summing up of his work, which then covered a period of fifty years. It is a lyric, free-verse poem in which a first-person speaker looks back on his life's journey and the many changes he has known, including difficult situations and losses incurred. In spite of these losses, the poet looks forward to the remaining years; he expects more transformations and changes and embraces whatever awaits him next. The Layers thus serves as an introduction to the later work of Kunitz, in which he shed some of the more intellectual approaches of his earlier poetry in favor of a simpler, more direct style.
