    The Snow-Storm

    Ralph Waldo Emerson

    1847

    Introduction

Ralph Waldo Emerson's often anthologized poem The Snow-Storm was one of the most popular pieces in his well-received first collection of poetry, Poems, published in 1847. The Snow-Storm has also been recognized as one of the most important statements of American transcendentalism, an influential nineteenth-century philosophical and literary movement that celebrated the beauty and power of nature and how the establishment of a communion with nature can benefit humans. The poem can be found in several anthologies, including volume one of Anthology of American Literature, published by Pearson Education in 2004.

The Snow-Storm describes a farmhouse and the surrounding area, which snow covered one night by a severe storm. The wind and snow work together during this night, first to cover and then transform the ordinary farm buildings into works of art. Those inhabiting the farmhouse are unable to appreciate the majesty of the storm and so refuse the communion with nature that the speaker offers them. Emerson also makes a clear statement in the poem concerning the power of the poet. He uses the actions of the wind and snow as illustrations of the creative genius of the poet, for, as Emerson explains in his essay, The Poet, the beauty of things … becomes a new, and higher beauty, when expressed.
