INTRODUCTION
Ann Patchett's fourth novel, Bel Canto, portrays the relationships that develop over a four-and-a-half month hostage situation. Notably, the novel is based on a similar hostage situation that occurred in Lima, Peru, from 1996 to 1997. The novel takes this real-life occurrence and transforms it into an examination of humanity—of how love, friendship, and hope can flourish in even the most unlikely of circumstances. The novel's themes additionally explore issues of class and privilege. Although several of the young terrorists are as kind, talented, and gifted as their captives, their disparate station in life has led them to widely diverse destinies. The power of art is also
