Roulette My Way - Herb Stephens
CHAPTER ONE
HISTORY OF ROULETTE
Roulette is the oldest of all the casino games being played today, and the modern roulette wheel has been the cynosure of casino gambling for more than 200 years.
In many European casinos, roulette accounts for more than half the legal gaming revenue. In the United States, roulette accounts for less than five percent of the total gaming revenues.
One of the earliest descriptions of the present form of roulette can be found in the French novel La Roulette ou le Jouer by Jacques Lab lee, was published in 1801. In 1843, when the twin brothers, François and Louis Blanc opened their casino in Homburg, Germany, they introduced the first single—zero roulette wheel. This was in a successful play to take business away from other Casinos.
Twenty years later, Francois Blanc purchased the failing casino in Monte Carlo and installed single—zero roulette wheels. It set the standards for the rest of Europe. Double zero wheels found their way to New Orleans. Then the U.S. wheels had twenty-eight numbered pockets plus three house pockets marked with a zero, a double zero, and an eagle. The house paid single-number odds at only 26 to 1, giving it a 12.9% advantage.
When single-number odds were paid at 35 to 1, the double-zero French wheel had a house advantage of only 5.26%. This was much better.
Today, the single zero French wheel has an advantage of only 2.70% without en prison for even money bets. With en prison, for even money bets, the house has an advantage of only 1.35%.
You may ask the question why I should write a book on roulette. I have read most of the books on roulette and I truly believe that they have all missed the key to the game of Roulette. After recording over 50,000 spins in live casinos, I’ve discovered that the key to roulette is the precursor to a number. I have discovered that certain numbers follow certain numbers. I will insert a caveat here; certain numbers follow certain numbers at a much better ratio than the 37 to 1 ratio probability would indicate, if one is playing with a good spinner. To define a good spinner you simply need to read the chapter on picking a spinner. If one follows the information in this book, one has a much better
