This is the true story of a single mom who has survived some major life obstacles. From losing twins at twenty-six weeks and finding out her husband had a child with another woman to going through the trauma of divorce and not one but two custody trials, she has survived and thrived with God’s help.   Several years after the divorce, her two boys wanted to live with their dad, who was by then living in another state. After many tears and much prayer, she let them go. While the boys were with their dad, she felt led to apply to nurse anesthesia school, a very challenging graduate program. With a house to sell and no financing, she stepped out in faith and applied to the program. Just three weeks before classes began, her house sold and the financing for school was provided. The boys came home and attended school with her! Now working as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) for almost ten years, she knows that God has a plan for her life. He has a plan for yours as well!

    Preface

People I want to mention that have influenced my life and worldview:

My parents: Will & Tot. I never would have made it without their love and support while raising my boys as a single mom. My sister Lynn, she has always had my back. Aunt Mary Kaye…you were going through your own personal crisis around the same time that I was. Thank you for always being there for me. I love you. My dear friend Jana: those intense Bible studies when we spent at least 6 months in the book of John every Friday night at my sister’s house were awesome!! We all learned so much. We sent all of our boys down to the basement and let them play, sent a pizza down to them, and got into the meat of the Word (always with the hope that they would pass out!).

To all of my old ER nurse buddies…you were there for me when I lost my twins and my marriage. When my life was falling apart, you were my stability. Bonnie, Sally, Kathy, Lynda, Linda, Sue Anne, Joyce, Sharon, Lisa, Steven, Jabecca, Debbie, Phil, Kathy, Kaye, Anita, Liz, Carol, Benetta, Carlotta, Linda, Joyce C., Ginger and Bill, Carol S., Debbie R., and Carol Jean…you guys were there for me and I’ll always love you for it. And of course Dr. Fitz…thank you for writing me that awesome letter that really helped me get into anesthesia school. Bob, fellow CRNA and mentor, also a huge thank you for another great letter. Love you. Debbie—you helped me so much with your letter and housing and friendship. Thank you so much; Love you tons!

My neighbors from my teenage years: Cindy, Biddy, Randy, Steph, & Mrs. B. We all had such a great time together back in the day…and more recently on our game nights. Let’s do it again this summer! And next time, I’m going on the World Tour with you!

I’d like to mention a few of my teachers along the way: Becky N., my 10th grade Health teacher. You had an enthusiasm for teaching and life that was inspiring. I think your class really influenced my choice to become a nurse and inspired me to want to learn. What a gift.

All of my professors in nurse anesthesia school: Nancy, Bill, Priscilla, and Cassie. You made learning a LOT of fun, and always understood when my personal life was askew. I can’t imagine what you thought when I was missing class. I hope you read this and then you’ll know!! Others I’d like to mention are all of the amazing CRNAs who were my clinical instructors as well as the MD anesthesiologists overseeing us. I really appreciate all of you sharing your knowledge, experience and tips during my anesthesia training. Thanks.

My more recent friends of the last decade: Dori, Molly V.MD, Kelly, Ralph & Sarah, Greg, Kim and Noreen. Dinners, cookouts, trips…all these have helped me maintain my sanity. You guys are the bomb. Thanks.

Also I want to mention my current co-workers: my dear friends Barbara & Joan, and all of the OR and anesthesia staff. You are an awesome group of professionals and I count it a privilege to work with each and every one of you.

To my ex-husband and his wife and extended family: I’ve learned so much from this situation. You’ll most likely see things differently than what I’ve described. Truly I have forgiven you and I do pray for you guys. Anger and bitterness will only destroy you. It’s been a tough lesson but one I’ve learned over many years. Feel free to write your own book, I’d like to read it.

On the spiritual side of things, I’d like to thank WWJD, my favorite radio station. I discovered you shortly after I became a Christian. Your teaching, music and instruction have been invaluable. I listen to you every day, and will until the day I die. Keep up God’s good work.

Bill Keller, of Liveprayer.com. I’ve been getting your daily devotionals since the year 2000. You are right on. I appreciate your willingness to take a stand for the truth of God’s Word, even in the face of threats from the enemy. Hang in brother. If God is FOR us, WHO can be against us???

James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family…for several years while raising my boys, I received your single parent magazine. I devoured every issue. I’m not sure if you’re still publishing it, but God knew I needed that wisdom and He met that need through FOTF. God bless you.

Of course, Pastor Hagee and his teaching. My friend Jabecca and I used to get your cassette tapes every month. I believe they’re still in my attic in a shoebox. That was a huge influence on my life. My mom was saved at a rally put on by Pastor Hagee. Jabecca…you’ll never know how much God used you in my life.

Several others: Steve K., our family counselor. Pastor Darrell & Lori, Pastor Sharon, Chaplain Gordon V., Pastor Kevin, Pastor Roy & Sharon and multiple other awesome people of God. Jody & Suzanne, Rita & Gaylord, JoNell & Dave, Jenny & Eric, Larry Burkett, Dave Ramsey, & Reg Kelly. There are so many and please forgive me if I forgot anyone.

To all of my favorite authors: Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Janet Evanovich, CJ Sansom, Jean Plaidy, Stephen Lawhead, Arianna Franklin, Alison Weir, David Starkey, Agatha Christie, Elizabeth Chadwick, Alexandre Dumas, Corrie Ten Boom, Ken Follett, Michelle Moran, William Shakespeare, Thomas Paine, Max Lucado, Thomas Jefferson, Joel Rosenburg, Larry Schweikart, and so many others, too numerous to mention. Reading books has been my salvation. You have all helped to form my worldview as well as educate and entertain me on this journey. Thank you all. My ardent prayer is that my children and grandchildren come to know you as well, if not better than I do.

And to my sons: Jake. You were my first, my perfect baby. I was so afraid to take you home; I had already been a nurse for 7 years. The responsibility of it overwhelmed me. By the grace of God I hope I’ve been a good mom to you and Jack. You are already facing your own challenges and I just want you to know that God has a plan for you. Trust Him. Jack: I always felt like you got the short end of the stick. When you were tiny I was so focused on saving my marriage that I felt like you never got the best of me. That has bothered me for years, but I have forgiven myself for it. I’ve done the best I could do, and that’s all God asks of us. I hope you can forgive me. Just trying to make a living and survive hasn’t been easy. I wouldn’t wish single parenthood on anyone. The world is hard enough to live in right now. I have prayed for each of you to have strong loving spouses to support you and respect you for this journey here on earth. And God has answered that prayer. Bex is an awesome strong woman that loves you. Catherine is back with us now and is doing great. She has a prayer journal that she writes in frequently; they are all attending church and things are so much better. Hang in; trust Him, all of you. Praise God that this life is not all there is. Remember, we’re just visiting this planet.

And most of all, thank you to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Even before I was consciously aware of you and before I was saved, I knew you were there. You’ve shown me that everything happens for a reason, even though I may not see it this side of heaven. Thank you for your grace. I love you.

    Chapter One

Ok…I don’t even know where to start. So many crazy things have happened to me in my life that the only possible reason I’m not insane is because of the grace of God. So if you can’t handle the truth…that God is in control and has a PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE, just stop reading right now. But if you want to hear an interesting story – all of it true – then keep reading. I really don’t have enough imagination to invent this stuff.

    One thing that
