About this ebook

Some Comments from Lens Students
I want you to know that in my many years of being a student, you easily rank as the best teacher I have ever had. Your skill and patience has made me infinitely more comfortable with my weapons and myself. The next class you teach, I'll be there in a heartbeat. I'm sure you don't have to be reminded of the multitude of people you have touched and the positive impact you have had on firearms training overall.
Bob Patridge
Len has taught me to effectively and safely use a handgun and rifle and for that I will always be grateful. I look forward to the time I spend once or twice a week under his instruction. Len has created a wide range of firearms training programs out of virtually nothing and trained a sizeable and competent cadre of firearms instructors who, like me, greatly respects the man. He is engaged with his students and always approachable. Students who have shot much longer than me comment on his great depth of knowledge and ability to improve their shooting. He clearly loves to teach the material and his enthusiasm is contagious. He has a great sense of humor and makes his classes a lot of fun. But in spite of all of this the safety of his students is always his first concern.
Dr. Noel Pillman, MD
I am a retired police officer and a former police firearms instructor for over 20 years. I have been to numerous firearms training classes over the years but have not had any instructors more professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to what they do then Len Breure.
Maurice Merabella
"Len was my first real 'tactical' instructor a few years ago. He is a thorough, safe, and well versed instructor. His teaching style is unique in a way that clearly conveys lessons and makes them easy to understand for experienced shooters and novices alike. Len brings a wealth of prior "been there, done that" experience to the table that's an asset to his teaching, and is rarely found in many of the new instructors that have come to the arena since most states have enacted concealed carry laws. I continue to train with a variety of tactical instructors, and am always amazed by how much of the information Len taught me is still the foundation upon which I build."
Mike VanMeeteren
"I have been fortunate enough to receive numerous training courses that were being taught by Len Breure. In my opinion, Len is one of the best in the business! It is very rewarding to be able to learn from someone who has the experience and knowledge to take tactical training to the next level."
Jim Bryant
I first meet Len while taking my Minnesota Concealed Carry Course in 2005. Since that time I have taken every course that Len teaches. In my opinion Len is the consummate professional, who teaches with passion and an incredible degree of knowledge. I would strongly urge anyone interested in personal protection to take Lens courses.

Author

Dr. Leonard M. Breure

As a professional, who for over 30 years has made his living on a daily basis with a weapon, Dr. Breure takes seriously the tactics and techniques that work in the real world. Below you will find a brief description of his credentials. Len has had the opportunity to collect a host of training, experience and awards. These include military “Expert” ratings with the M-1911 and M-9 pistols; M-16 and M-4 assault rifles; M-79 and M-203 grenade launchers; M-2 and M-60 machine guns; MP-5 sub-machine gun and M-14 battle rifle. Add to that instructor certification, as both an Infantry and Military Police Weapons Instructor and you have a solid foundation to build on for training and experience with Special Response Teams and Anti-Terrorist Operations. He was also able to round out his military career with Sniper Training, shooting on the Army Rifle Team, serving as a Lanes Training Observer/Controller and being a member of the New Iraqi Army Training Team. Early in his law enforcement career, Len was given the opportunity to become a firearms instructor. That led to becoming the Range Master of the county’s police academy, responsible for all the weapons training for the 19 agencies within the county. These duties progressed to positions as an Instructor Trainer for the New Jersey Police Training Commission, a Special Response Team Instructor and as Emergency Services Coordinator for his police department. Len has also had the opportunity to accumulate a number of degrees and honors in the academic realm. Graduating Summa Cum Laude three times, Len holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice, a Master of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice Management and a Doctorate Degree in Criminal Justice Education. Over the years Len Breure has been involved in numerous types of firearms competition, earning N.R.A. expert ratings in High Power Rife and Practical Pistol, I.P.S.C. AA class rating and U.S. Army Excellence in Competition medals for both rifle and pistol. This pales in comparison, however, to having “seen the elephant” as Col. Jeff Cooper would say, on several occasions. He has also had the opportunity to train under (or conduct training with) some of this nation’s finest. These have included the F.B.I., D.E.A., B.A.T.F.E. and Department of Defense. Much of what he teaches and lives by today, comes from such noteworthy instructor’s as Chuck Taylor -American Small Arms Academy, Col. Jeff Cooper – Gunsite Academy, Massad Ayoob - Lethal Force Institute, John Farnam – Defense Training and many others. As an author, Dr. Breure had written 4 law enforcement training manuals and 5 military training manuals. He is also the author of “The Personal Protection Handbook” which is a comprehensive training manual for handgun shotgun and rifle. His second book, “Personal Protection Tools” deals with the guns and gear available to today’s Operator. In addition, Len has also written numerous articles for several gun magazines and police trade journals.

Do I agree with everything in this book? Absolutely Not. Do I think you should read this book? Absolutely. Why?

Personal Protection Training is an impressive collection of wisdom, information and anecdote presented with original thoughts from one of the most sincere thinkers that I have met in the industry over the past 15 years. Dr. Leonard Breure takes this material seriously and offers this collection in the sincere hope that it will help people prepare for, avoid and/or survive a lethal encounter involving the use of firearms. Regardless of which parts of this book you accept as gospel or discard as tripe, thinking about the material will make you better. Critically Thinking about the material and how it applies to you will make your experience better and improve the value dramatically.

Taken independently, the chapters of this book have specific lessons to teach. Taken as a whole, this book represents significant insight into both the skills of defending yourself with a gun and the context of the need for those skills. While the former is usually what people are looking for, the latter should not be overlooked. With firsthand accounts of actual shooting incidents and lessons derived from the in depth study of many situations, you have the opportunity to think about your own life and the circumstances under which you may be forced to defend yourself… and the opportunity to avoid putting yourself in situations that would stack the odds in favor of you becoming a target or lower the odds of you surviving a fight.

In addition to his own concepts and insight, Dr. Breure has included thoughts from a diverse collection of contributors almost all of whom I have discussed training topics with, some in passing and some at great length. I have recommended information from all of them and I have changed things that I personally do or teach because of them. I have been forced to reconsider my own positions and I have been inspired to do more research based on things that they have said. Which sections of this book will be the ones you most recommend? Which sections will inspire you to change something about the way you train or the way you live? Which will cause you to do more research about a particular topic? Which will inspire you to challenge something you currently believe about defensive shooting?

Everyone’s training resources (time, budget, interest, range access, etc.) are limited. When you are finished with this book, I am confident that you will have a better idea how to spend your time, effort and energy in preparation for Personal Protection.

    Introduction

Victory starts in the heart of the warrior!

The world around us seems to be unraveling at the seams. Terrorism, home grown or international, unending crises in the Middle East, high gas prices, economic collapse, crime, the list goes on and on. With this apparent deterioration of civilization there has never been a greater need for noble men and women to pick up the tools of a warrior and meet the coming challenges-whatever they might be.

The three roles, Citizen, Soldier or Law Enforcement Office that I hope to address in this my third book of the Personal Protection series, share many values, philosophies, and foundations. While the duties are diverse, the mindset and many of the tools of the trade are very similar.

It is my desire to look at these challenges in three parts. The first is mindset and philosophy. Any endeavor needs a proper foundation. Second would be the basic fundamentals of training with, living with and becoming comfortable with live firearms. Part three gets us into more advanced gun handling and tactics. While some of this is weapon specific, much of what you will find in this volume will apply across the board to handguns, shotguns and rifles.

A couple of issues should be addressed before we begin. Some serious soul searching must be done before you spend the time, effort and money to travel the Warrior Way. It is not for the faint of heart or those not willing to take this responsibility upon themselves. Look into the deepest, darkest corners of your being and answer this question: If it really came down to it, could I take the life of another human being? The second question is: Are you willing to put in the time and effort to do this right, not just half-heartedly?

Finally, you need to make three promises to yourself. First, buy only the very best guns and gear that you can afford. Your life will most likely depend on it! Second, get the best training that you can find, and then get some more. Lastly, promise yourself that you will practice, practice, and practice some more! Good guns and gear, solid, realistic training and lots of proper practice will see you far on your journey along the Warrior Way.

    Part #1-Mind Set & Philosophy

    The Warrior Way

By Dr. Leonard M. Breure, PhD

Every society has its warrior class. America in the 21st century is no exception. Whether it’s the soldier defending their country, the police officer guarding their community or the private citizen protecting their home, all are warriors in the battle between good and evil.

The starting point for all these individuals is the realization that something must be done to secure those things that are important to them. It is the knowledge that someone must stand in the gap. The epoch quote is true, All that is necessary for evil to prosper, it for good men to do nothing! It is the understanding that they and they alone are responsible for the safety of their families, their community and their country.

Once an individual has come to realize that they are the one who must draw the line in the sand and, standing firm, say; ENOUGH! then and only then can they begin their journey into the Warrior Way.

Whatever one’s calling in this greatest of struggles; citizen, soldier or law enforcement officer-the journey is similar and the tools needed to survive the same. While the path taken and the obstacles encountered may be vastly different, the goal and the destination are surprisingly comparable.

    Heraclitus (circa 500 B.C.) said of men in battle;

Of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there.

    Eighty are nothing but targets.

Nine are real fighters, we are lucky to have them, they make the battle. Ah, but the One… "One of them is a Warrior…"

He will bring the others back.

What is it then that makes the Warrior? What sets this one individual apart from the other 99? I would like to offer a few suggestions…

Barry Goldwater said, Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue. I believe that the first characteristic of a Warrior is dedication.

As a police officer, I was determined to do whatever it took to go home to my wife and kids at the end of my shift. As a soldier, my desire was to be the best that I could be. As a husband and father, I would not let anything or anyone come between me and my family. Here an example of dedication…

    MISSION FIRST

Darkness fell as Team 104 loaded their 11 ton truck.

MSR Patrol through the White Horse Pass,

Not the first patrol and not the last.

Just once they’d like to hideout in town,

And tell Operations they made their rounds,

But they hear all too often that two-word verse,

    Their Company’s Motto MISSION FIRST.

Patrolling an area that’s usually quite,

    It’s alive with movement tonight.

Dismount, Recon what do they find?

    Enemy Infantry, the airborne kind.

    With their position radioed in,

It’s time now for the delay to begin.

Claymores set-up off to the right,

    LAWs extended ready for flight,

Six lonely eyes stare into the night.

The urge is strong to run,

When you’re out numbered one hundred to one.

But they’ve heard all too often that two-word curse,

    That Company Motto MISSION FIRST.

No one knows how they found the time,

    That had to be found,

Until help could arrive to finish the fight,

That three lonely MP’s started that night.

    Nothing remains of Team 104,

Just another legend for the MP CORPS,

And three white crosses that bear this verse,

THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR MISSION FIRST!
