This is the 60th Anniversary of taking my religious vows in the congregation of Holy Cross. I am extremely grateful to all of the Brothers and Priests who encouraged and sustained me through these very joyful years. This book is also for them.
America’s working poor face real challenges in how they are viewed at work and often in how they view themselves. In most cases, lower-waged workers have little power to change the circumstances they encounter at work.
So this book is most importantly dedicated to those managers who do have that power, and the desire, to transform the lives of their lower-waged employees for the better. My hope for them is that they have the understanding, the compassion, and most of all the courageous will… to do just that.

While it is a fact that the wage rates paid to workers in many lower-waged jobs are low and will likely remain low; it is also true that managers and supervisors in all segments of today’s economy have an extraordinary opportunity to demonstrate to these workers that their value is high.
Managers and supervisors can have this impact because the economic world we live in is the direct result of our own actions; not the inevitability of mysterious market forces.
In most cases, America’s low-wage workers have limited power to change their working conditions, but that limitation is not at all mysterious. Rather it is the direct result of a series of political, economic and corporate decisions made by real people. And real people have the ability to change the lives of lower-waged workers for the better; . . . if they choose to do so.

Doing the Right Thing IS the Right Thing to Do
This book was written to identify specific low-cost or no-cost steps that pragmatic, yet enlightened, employers can take to affirm the value and enhance the self-worth of their lower-waged employees.
It is a reality of today’s economy that much of the work done each day is assigned to workers who have limited skills, limited education, or both. The lower pay of these workers reflects those limitations. It is essential to understand, however, that while their pay may be low, their importance, and the importance of their work, is very high.
Food service workers, hotel room attendants, cashiers in retail stores, grocery store stockers, janitorial services workers, child care workers, office cleaners, lawn care providers, health care aides, and farm workers are just a few examples of the myriad groups of employees who daily perform tasks that are of critical significance to those they serve, as well as to the efficient operation of our economy and the betterment of all our lives.
In the best of worlds, perhaps, these essential workers would immediately receive pay raises that would allow them to readily achieve the dreams they have for themselves and to meet the aspirations they have for their families. The reality for these workers, however, is that due to economic practicality most will not receive significant increases in pay.
