CHAPTER ONE
Accountability. We hear the word in almost every environment that we find ourselves a part of today. While the word certainly is a common source of discussion, the definition of the word seems to vary from person to person. Does accountability refer to corporate development? Does it refer to financial success? How about personal relationships? What about personal accountability? Can we actually hold others accountable for their behavior? Is accountability a one-size-fits-all technique that ensures the success of a task?
There are numerous definitions of accountability and a variety of ways to instill accountability in yourself and others. The truth is that accountability is simply a philosophical idea or intangible thought process unless we choose to make it personal, measurable, and thus tangible. We are choosing to focus this book around REAL accountability. REAL Accountability is a tool that we have found to be effective and powerful when used by those leaders who choose to practically apply it’s concepts.
Before we begin the process of diving into the REAL accountability model let’s review the personality types discovered in Make A Difference, which is a precursor to this book. While it is not necessary to begin with Make A Difference, the first book in the EAGLE Leadership series, doing so will add valuable infrastructure to your leadership and relationship strategy.
We learned in Make A Difference that personalities are important to the success of any relationship both personally and professionally. Understanding your own personality and how to connect with and validate those with different personalities are the key concepts discovered in this book.
If you would like to discover your personality type and how we’ve defined the personality types of others, check out our website at eaglecenterforleadership.com. There you can purchase the Make a Difference book as well as take the personality assessment online and immediately discover your personality type. We have described the four major personality types as animals. The four animals in our personality assessments are the much-loved monkey, the leading lion, the competent camel, and the tranquil turtle.
Let’s take a moment to look at a brief overview of each of the personality types.
Image24081.PNG The Much-Loved Monkey has the ability to commu-nicate very effectively. This person is a people-person. The monkey loves to swing from tree to tree and is, therefore, very versatile and flexible in the work environment. Relationships are extremely important, as is recognition for a job well done. The work environment must be stimulating, or the Monkey will become bored with the job. People skills, understanding, and helping others are real strengths. The Monkey can be overly sensitive to criticism and has a tendency to monkey around
and play when consistency and concentration are needed.
Image24088.PNG The Leading Lion has the ability to lead the pack
with great vision. This person is very task-driven and will do whatever it takes to accomplish the mission. Being in control of the work situation is very important to the lion. He or She is decisive and goal-oriented. The Lion is confident and likes to be challenged in his or her job. This person generally desires to be in leadership positions; however, the lion must learn to delegate the details of the task to others if he or she is going to be effective. Patience is not a virtue of the lion. He or she is capable of attacking others with rudeness and uncaring dominance.
Image24095.PNG The Competent Camel has the ability to stay focused and complete the task. This person is very detail-oriented. The camel works well with a prescribed set of standards and has the ability to cross the desert until the task is completed. They work well in a systematic environment and strive hard for accuracy. Always well prepared, the camel usually has not only Plan A, but Plan B and Plan C as well. They are go-to
people who are very dependable and loyal. Camels tend to be practical and logical although they can bring mood swings to the work environment. Once a camel begins a journey, it is extremely hard for that person to change directions. This leads to inflexibility in the work place. Camels can be negative and critical toward others as well as toward themselves.
Image24102.PNG The Tranquil Turtle has the ability to be steady and secure. This person likes well-defined procedures and expectations. The turtle brings peace, consistency and follow-through to the work place. They excel in jobs with specific skills and training.
Family is extremely important to the turtle; therefore, traveling or constant change within the work place (that interferes with home life) would bring a high level of frustration. The turtle creeps along at a slow speed and can have a hard time making decisions. The higher the stress level, the
