    The authors are lecturers in the Department of Public Law, University of Maiduguri. They have also been engaged in active law practice. Their combined efforts have brought out the law relating to armed robbery, theft, and housebreaking in Nigeria with particular emphasis on the commission of these crimes in Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe States. They have also endeavoured to highlight the relevance of criminal statistics.

      PREFACE

      The approach of the law to acts which interfere with the smooth running of the society is to prohibit such acts and in addition impose a penalty for breach of such prohibition. The object is to protect the society, individuals and their properties.

      The offences of armed robbery, theft and house breaking are offences against the property. The provisions of the Penal Code Law relating to these offences are meant to provide protection for persons against interference with their properties.

      The rate of commission of such offences has over the years been on the increase.

      We have attempted in this work to provide some basic explanation of the reasons for this growth and indeed the reasons why the offences are committed. Thus paving the way for a discussion of the relevance and the statistics of the selected offences in Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe States.

      It is obvious that significant number of allegations of the commission of such offences go unreported. The explanation for this may be found in a number of factors. One such factor is arrest. An appreciation of the law relating to arrest in this regard becomes necessary. We have been able to highlight the significance of criminal statistics against the back drop of the statistics of the offences of armed robbery, theft and house breaking. The revelation by available records shows a gap between the perception of the public with regards to the prevalence of these crimes and the reality in the records.

      This it is hoped would be of immense benefit to law enforcement agents, criminologists, law lecturers, students of law and the general public.

      The Law on Armed Robbery, Theft and House breaking in Nigeria: a survey of Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe States presents the first comprehensive material on the area in practical terms where the law relating to the offences were highlighted and the statistics of the rate of the commission of the crimes brought out.

      This, I believe, would not only be introducing a unique literature to the law library but will also go a long way in providing for those involved in the administration of criminal justice in the four states and indeed beyond a guide towards adopting the best strategy for tackling these crimes.

      I commend the authors of the book for trying to lay the first foundation by advocating recourse to statistical records in the administration of criminal justice.
