The beginnings of this book arrived in my heart early in 2009, like seeds being planted in my subconscious. As the year progressed, the person I had imagined myself to be dissolved into an unrecognizable heap of ashes. And within that fertile ground, the seeds remained unharmed. As my mind and body healed, these seeds took root and grew quietly and strongly until I was ready to allow their wisdom to pour forth into this book. For this experience, for my constantly unfolding and amazing life, and for the guidance and ever-present love from the Divine Source—for all these I am deeply grateful.

The Flow of Being Authentic
I sense that you and I both yearn for the same ultimate experience: for our lives to be a constant flow of love, trust, and joy. However, our daily realities don’t always seem to meet this higher expectation, and you, like me, have probably felt a strong urge to work out why. Then you picked up this book, wondering if it might just give you a few clues.
My wish for you in reading this book is that you will begin to fully experience an authentic life—a life filled with an uninterrupted flow of love, trust, and joy. As children, we experienced this flow as naturally as the sun shines down on the earth. A feeling of love and acceptance moved naturally through our hearts and minds, and if anything interrupted it, we would cry, shout, and let our feelings out and then be back to being in the flow again.
Throughout this book, I use the terms being authentic
and the flow of an authentic life
to express the deeper energetic connection that comes from surrendering to and enjoying what is present in this moment of now. Of course, what is present may feel pleasurable, but other times it may not. Authenticity does not equal pleasure; rather, it points towards a more profound acceptance of the movement of life and its continual state of change as applied to our mental, physical, and emotional worlds. It’s about a sense of strong alignment with the truth of the moment.
The strongest influence on our current sense of well-being and acceptance is our past and, in particular, how we learned to conceptualise our experiences when we were children. When we were very young, we experienced the delightful present moment as a never-ending flow of positive energy; therefore, any events that appeared to stop this flow had a strong impact on us. Around these events we began to create stories that reflected what each of us believed could be the cause of the bad feeling, or what I call the k(not) in our flow—the story that says this should not be happening. Our minds always attempt to make sense of life and, if we are troubled, our minds try to soothe us with stories. For example, in childhood, we’d say things like Johnny is being selfish,
or Kim is bad-tempered,
or even I must be bad because I talk too much in class.
The story or label helped us justify what was happening, and then we could get back to life again.
Those simple stories that we began telling ourselves, and the ones that others in our immediate families told us, reinforced the view that objects external to us and our own behaviours, were the cause of the flow stopping. Our minds filed away these stories, especially those with a strong emotional content. Now, in the present, their essential features are remembered even more than the incident that provoked them in the past. For example, when I was nine years old, I saw a brown bear for the first time while camping with my best friend’s family. The feeling associated with it was excitement and awe,
and I can still feel those emotions when I think about the incident today, although I can’t recall much about the event’s details. My story about that incident is this: Seeing bears is an exciting and awe-inspiring experience.
Although my story about this particular bear may have been true, does that mean that every future experience with a bear would be the same for me? For about ten years after that initial encounter, I had several more exciting experiences when seeing bears, so my mind continued to reinforce my story. Then my experiences began to change. When I took up backpacking around the age of twenty, I became annoyed by the theft of my precious food by the mongrel bears! The story had changed. It now became: Bears are menaces, and I would rather not have them nearby.
So, stories can reinforce a certain feeling in us even before we experience a future event. This occurs because of the link between our stories’ content and particular emotions, especially the stronger and more negatively charged emotions, such as anger, fear, and depression. These create very deep connections to our stories.
