About this ebook

On a lovely autumn day in a quiet neighbourhood village, Feathers Territory is formed after some garden birds discover that seeds and nuts have been set out for them in most of the back gardens. This is a welcoming sight for the birds as they are aware that winter is approaching.

The winter is very harsh. The garden birds soon learn they have to survive and occupy themselves in the very cold and snowy weather. Their life is never boring. They make use of all the facilities in the gardens and learn how to fend off their unwelcoming enemies.

How do the garden birds manage to survive the winter?

Surprises in the Gardens and a

    Naughty Magpie

That garden looks the perfect place to be, tweeted Lola. She was a female house sparrow with a loud singsong voice, originally from the nearest town and now preferred to live in the nearer suburban neighbourhood area for peace and quiet. I am so sick and tired of the heavy fumes from the cars. It makes me feel sickly.

Me too, Wilfred the feral pigeon said in his deep cooing voice. He was such a thoughtful bird. The smell of pizza everyday had put me and my mates off and here we are now; the smell of the fresh autumn air had brought us here.

That makes a dying taste in my tongue. Is there anywhere to get a bite to eat? Lola already felt a mouth-watering taste in her beak.

Wilfred pointed to a garden far down below. Look! There are some apples under the tree at that large garden.

They swooped down to a back garden and landed on a large lawn. Large selection of colourful leaves was all over the place. Wilfred and Lola fetched some cooking apples from under one of the apple trees. But the cooking apples had a rotten taste of cider. All they wished for now was a huge feast of all varieties of seeds and peanuts to last throughout the forthcoming winter.

The sunrise had risen up with a lovely view among the three tall trees at the other large garden next door. A tiny, sweet blue tit emerged out of her bird box and went up a few branches higher. As she landed on one of the longer branches, she met up with a blackbird and a robin there. This little trio who were the best of friends since they were young fledglings, were watching the changeable, colourful leaves coming away from the branch ends.

I couldn’t think of anything else today, Hetty the blue tit tweeted beautifully. I just love watching the leaves changing colours and falling away.

We looked at the leaves for the last few days, Hetty, Robin the robin told her. We should go ahead to the lawn for a change today.

And see more leaves! Bill the blackbird said with a curious look.

The trio flew down to a garden lawn. There was a large greenhouse, several small trees, bushes and a couple of flowerpots. They landed, began their walkabouts and heard their claws crunching on the dead leaves. As they reached to the middle, the trio stopped by a narrow pole. With their heads up high they discovered a feeding station. Where did it come from? It wasn’t there yesterday. This could be a new start for the garden birds. Hetty jumped aboard on the feeding station. She was already in for a quick bite, taking one or two wild birdseeds from a bird feeder. Was it edible for garden birds? The seeds were absolutely crunchy.

Hetty turned around and heard, Wow! What have we got here!

She looked at one of the small trees where Bill and Robin were already tucking into a coconut shell.

Come here and have a taste of it, Hetty! Bill called over to her.

Hetty went over to her best friends and had her turn to try out the coconut treat.

She licked and smacked her beak. So sweet!

Robin went up to the fence and caught a glimpse of the other large garden. I can’t believe it! he exclaimed. More surprises!

Bill twittered thoughtfully and joined Robin on the fence. This lot will be all ours. He sung nicely in his best vocals.

So the trio went to the nearest apple tree. Another bird feeder and coconut shell were also there.

Hetty became very excited. Maybe Santa Claus came earlier this year!

Robin found a piece of paper at a very end branch and read it. It was only a short note. He folded it and went towards to Hetty with it.

Here Hetty! It’s a bit early for Santa Claus Robin said with a laugh. Have a read of this! He handed the short note to her.

Hetty reopened the piece of paper. The little note read:

    Your wish has been granted.

I hope it’s very useful to

    you throughout the winter!

    Milly xxx

How sweet of her! Hetty said. She and the next door neighbour are the only people of the neighbourhood who ever think of the poor birds as the predicted long winter is looming on us. Whoever they are, I would like to thank them.

A loud, cooing voice came over the trio. It was Wilfred. He joined the trio on the branch.

Good news! We discovered the treasure that we wanted! The feral pigeon looked pleased with himself with a little joy of sunflower seeds in his beak. More surprises could be waiting for the garden birds at the other gardens.

We all heard that! Bill reminded him and presented the coconut treat to him. Look at that grumpy old fool beside you!

A goldfinch appeared next to Wilfred. His feathers flared up as if he was about to loose his fiery temper.

Will you ever be happy again, Howie? Robin asked him.

Howie looked gloomy and didn’t respond.

Look! Here is Fleur! Hetty added.

The small trio had made space for the concerned greenfinch.

Are these ours? Are you really sure? Fleur demanded anxiously.

Of course, Bill told her. Nobody else will ever think of touching them throughout the winter months.

Fleur stood one side of the bird feeder and pecked away.

The garden birds suddenly jumped as high as the sky. They heard a terrible noise? What was that? It went chak chak.

The garden birds began to look around.

    Chak! Chak! Chak!

Bill, Hetty and Robin jumped on a fence, facing a row of
