Poppy's Faith: A Grandfather’S Journal of His Encounters with God
()
About this ebook
Children born into twenty-first century America are immersed in a society no other generation in our great nation has ever experienced. The influence of Christianity, the Bible, and the church, have been minimized, and in some cases silenced.
The Biblical mandate for the family to do the work of informing and training children in the things of God has never been more important. Poppys Faith is a step in this direction; it is a series of short stories that chronicle Gods involvement in the life of a regular guy from boyhood through retirement. Although it is addressed to the grandchildren of one family, the stories communicate the power of God to everyone.
Poppys Faith serves as a template and an inspiration to parents and grandparents who have the burden to keep the flame burning and pass the torch of faith in Christ to the next generation.

Poppy's Faith - Harry H. Bound
Introduction
And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.
Psalm 71:18
My Dear Grandchildren,
Oh how much you are loved and cherished, each one of you. Becoming a grandparent has introduced me to love in a different dimension. Love with deep relationship but without the day-to-day responsibility. My relationship with you all has already taught me things that I somehow missed while raising a family. In the same sense, I hope the stories of my encounters with God will strengthen our relationship and give you insight that you may not obtain elsewhere.
Not long after the oldest of you grandchildren was born, I was reading the book of Psalms, chapter 71 and came upon the passage quoted above. Inspired by this word, I began to create a journal of my encounters with God so I could pass them along to you. I made about one entry per month and saved them on the Internet with the hope that you would one day be motivated to read them. As time went by the number grew to the point where it was cumbersome, and somewhat inconvenient, to read in that format. I have put them in this volume so they would be personally available to each of you in a tangible and familiar media.
You may ask, as Grami did, what prompted me to choose this point in time to stop and publish them now. I was motivated, in part, by my age. Psalm 90 says, As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years.
Having reached my 70th birthday, I will press on reaching for 80, but for now I will place a marker in the journal and give you what I have so far. God willing, many more encounters are just around the corner, and perhaps we will experience some together.
As you read along I hope that four facts will be established:
- Jesus is alive and involved in the lives people today.
- The Bible is a trustworthy guide for our day-to-day lives.
- You most vividly experience life with Him when you obediently step out in faith and follow Him.
- He is indeed an awesome and gracious God and worthy of all praise!
I have purposed to relate only stories that I have seen or experienced on a first hand basis. So the result, to the best of my ability is truth.
Please do not try to repeat the experiences I have had. God has a life of experiences waiting for you that will be totally new and that I could not imagine!
Along the way there will be other influences in your life that promise great excitement with involvement in things that will take you down the wrong path. But I say to you that there is nothing that compares to the joy and excitement that comes with walking the path with Jesus.
Seek Him while He may be found. Embrace Him. Trust Him. He who seeks Him finds Him. When you find Him receive Him. When you receive Him walk with Him.
As you will see, the hand of God has been upon me throughout my life. I have no explanation for his blessings except that He is a loving God, and wants all to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. I do believe that others in my life were praying for me, especially my grandmother. Rest assured, my grandchildren, I have been praying, and will continue to pray, for each one of you.
I can’t wait to hear you tell of your encounters with God.
With a heart full of love for you,
Poppy
Paternal Roots
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction.
Proverbs 1:8
To adequately document my spiritual journey we should see where my parents and grandparents were in their relationship to Christ. I will start with my father.
My paternal grandfather was born in 1886 and died an accidental death in 1943 when a train hit his car at a railroad crossing. He was buried three days before my birth hence I bear his name. He was an honorable and industrious man who was general manager of a manufacturing plant at the time of his death.
My grandmother, born 1887, was a strong influence in our lives. She lived upstairs in the double house she owned, and for most of my childhood my family lived downstairs. We were always welcome in her home, and it was just a trip up the stairs to see her. Of course we shared the basement and the yard and we saw her daily.
She was a faithful member of a Lutheran church, and she attended when transportation was available. I think she tried to give my parents some space and not interfere in our lives, so she did not talk about spiritual things when she was in our apartment. However, on those occasions when we would sleep over with her she would teach us the Lord’s Prayer and recite the Twenty-third Psalm. My observation had always been that she had a relationship with Jesus. There is little doubt in my mind that she prayed for us often. She died in 1976.
Like others before him, my father did not complete high school, but he took correspondence courses to teach himself higher mathematics so he could become a die maker and designer. He was entrepreneurial and had his own tool and die business. I believe he was driven more to achieve independence rather than financial gain.
My father did not show a strong spiritual side while we were growing up and he never spoke of God or Jesus in those days. We were occasional attendees at the Lutheran church, and we always celebrated Christmas and Easter.
I had the privilege of witnessing when both my father and my mother prayed to
