Introduction
Peter Fleming intended to be a professor. His studies at the University of Washington were preparing him well for this goal. How far would he go? He had already pursued American literature and philosophy and had secured a master’s degree in English literature. Now he was considering the next step, and he believed God was leading him to seminary. His girlfriend, Olive Ainslie, was waiting for his decision. But something—or someone—intervened.
Pete was learning about the unreached savage Auca people in Ecuador from his long-time friend, Jim Elliot. Jim talked about going as a single man to reach these people and was looking for another single man to go with him. When Pete heard this, he believed God was calling him to fill that role. Pete’s church leaders did not encourage him to go with Jim at first, as they saw him as a teacher in the university world. But now that calling had became less sure for Pete. Finally, his elders commended him to the work in Ecuador. His commitment to Olive was rather abruptly dismissed. From then on, all attention was on Ecuador.
By the time the Aucas were found, the missionaries who answered the call to reach them had grown from just Jim and Pete to Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian. On January 8, 1956, these five men were killed by the Aucas. Was Pete mistaken about his earlier sense of calling to reach the Aucas? And did the great movement in missions that resulted from the five killings require their deaths?
On Olive’s part, after two and a half years of preparation waiting to go to Ecuador, she had finally joined Pete. But after her arrival in Ecuador, she experienced so much sickness due to the altitude that she began to question whether God had really called her there. Had she gone only because of Pete? Now she was holding him back from his ministry among the jungle people. It was not until over a year later, when Pete and the other four men were on the river beach in Auca territory, that she was reading in 2 Corinthians 5 and God’s call was confirmed for her. She read, He who prepared us for this very thing is God
(RSV). She had the assurance that God had called her, even though, days later, the bodies of Pete and the others were found in the river near the beach.
What assurance did Olive have now regarding her call to Ecuador? Had that call changed, or had this been the preparation for something further? A few months later, she returned home and was surprised to find that people knew about the five men being killed because of all the newspaper and TV coverage. She was met by TV reporters at the airport for an interview. That was the beginning of many interviews and speaking engagements, both secular and in church groups. It was not what she had expected, and she was not immediately prepared for it. People were interested in this story but could not understand why those men would go out to such savage Indians. This opened up a new world and a new opportunity for her to share the message of God’s love. She believed that God now had called her to tell this story.
I knew of Olive through the story of the five men but never heard her speak. I had prayed to meet her, but it seemed very unlikely. When we finally did meet, it was not planned by either of us. However, both of us believed that God had arranged our meeting, and we were married a few months later. Was Olive Fleming’s marriage to me foreseen and planned by God? Were our three children—David, Beverly, and Holly—and our seven grandchildren also in those plans?
For over fifty years, Olive and I have lived with these questions. And for most of those years, I have been thinking of writing a book. But this book is not the same as I had intended. As I proceeded with calling, I became more interested with sending. I have chosen not to deal with some issues related to calling, including some that others have already explored. Eventually, I invited my friend Tom Keppeler to offer some thoughts on that topic. I trust you will be excited by the results.
For many years, writers have struggled with the ideas of calling and sending, without bringing the two together. Of these, sending has received the most attention. That is natural. The more emphasis that has been given to missions, the more that has been heard about sending. Few writers have dealt with calling, except for a rather thin treatment here and there, somewhat like an evangelistic invitation following a weak sermon. The time has come for a thorough treatment of calling throughout Scripture. At the same time, rather than a mere repetition of information about sending, that topic receives a reworking that applies it to the contemporary scene.
My earliest clear church memory was of attending a service in a Baptist church in New York City when I was about four years old. I can recall specifically where I was sitting. Although I did not go to church often, I was taught the Bible at home. At the age of ten, I asked God to save me—the result of a footnote! I was reading a simple book with many footnotes. I looked up one that took me to John 3:7. It told me that I must be born again.
That marked my salvation, and a few years later, I was regularly attending a community Bible church.
During the intervening years, I took in the messages in the church and grew spiritually. When we moved to another church, I was eager to move ahead. While in high school, I was baptized. Life at school was exciting, but I never lost that faith. I went on to college at New York University, Shelton College, and Columbia University. I learned that I had several abilities, including music. I studied voice, organ, and conducting and led two choirs. Eventually, I was ordained, and over the years, I preached everywhere, from the street corner near my home to pulpits of every major denomination. My first church was Northport Baptist Church on Long Island, and my first teaching position was at Shelton College.
This was also a time of further study. Greek and Latin and related courses at Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, eventually led me to a PhD. During this time, I met Olive Fleming and was certain God had led us together. We were married in 1959, ready to serve the Lord together. Our first two children, David and Beverly, were born in Long Island, New York, while I was pastor of a church in Sea Cliff. Our third child, Holly, was born later, in the Chicago area, where I had begun teaching Greek and New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1963. During all this time, I had little sense of being called but a deep sense of God’s place in my life. On reflection, I think that the prayers of two godly parents affected me at every point.
Our experiences during our time at Trinity, where I taught for thirty-one years, included planting a church in Arlington Heights, Illinois, spending a year in Germany on sabbatical, and preaching and teaching on five continents. These activities, along with serving five years as pastor at Christ Church Lake Forest, all helped me grow in Christ. This is not intended just to list experiences but to say that every move, every experience, and every conversation gave opportunity to hear and respond to the call of God. That means that in my long life (eighty-seven years now) there were few major moves and few major events but rather a series of experiences of God’s grace. Many of these were great opportunities for spiritual growth. After our retirement, we have spent almost equal time successively in three lively churches. I can honestly say that all of them have contributed to our spiritual growth. God is good
