    About The Authors

    Foreword

By Bruno, Dominic and Matteo Lindia

The book you are about to read is all about teaching young people how to play an honest game—through a narrative that is at once candid and endearing.

In May 2010, my eldest son Dominic asked if he could play baseball as part of his summer activities.

Where we live in snowy Alberta, the baseball season is very short. So, as soon as the ground unfreezes, the boys make a mad dash for the nearest diamond, where they can resume their favorite sport.

My youngest son Matteo also insisted on trying out for the team. It was a league where the coaches pitch to the players during the game.

Dominic enjoyed his experience and looked forward to every practice and game. But Matteo was a bit too young to make the team, so the coach decided to name him a bat boy instead. As it turned out, there were always a few holes in the roster, so he soon took his turn in the lineup and wound up playing more than half the season!

At the end of the year, the boys agreed it had been lots of fun, but hadn’t yet fully grasped all the subtleties of the game. I reassured them that most fans—including myself—aren’t always aware of all the rules. I asked if they might be interested in enrolling again next spring. They said yes.

That following summer, the family decided to take a two-week vacation out in California. We brought along our bats and gloves, and decided that in between boogie-boarding in the Pacific Ocean and eating pizzas in San Diego’s Little Italy, we’d play catch and hit a few balls at a nearby park.

One day, we stumbled across a baseball clinic that looked like a lot of fun. So I enrolled them for a few hours each day to teach them the basics of the game.

Coach Josh was the lead instructor. He was a great influence on the boys, teaching them about the rudiments of baseball and how to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner, both on and off the field.

The boys liked it so much, the following year they enrolled in two consecutive sessions in LaJolla and Point Loma. My wife and I couldn’t complain, as we were able to soak in the California sunshine while waiting for our sluggers to finish their daily sessions.

That summer, Coach Josh did an amazing job with the boys and made sure to reward them for all their attention and hard work during the sessions.

Dominic earned his nickname the Great Dombino, because of his love for the New York Yankees and because of the long line drives that he hit with regularity.

It came naturally to him. The coach didn’t go crazy adjusting his stance, but rather encouraged him to find his own pitch and just meet the ball. It always made a crunching noise when it hit his bat!

When Dominic registered, on the application form it was written: "what position do you play?

    Dominic wrote: Batter!

His confidence rose with every at bat and with every word of encouragement from Coach Josh.

Matteo, a bit younger, wasn’t able to hit the ball very far. But what he lacked in strength, he more than made up in energy and enthusiasm. He wouldn’t let a pitch go by without swinging at it!

Matteo’s nickname, earned while playing ice hockey, was Louie. So when he took a big swing at a pitch that landed five feet in front of the plate, I’d yell: Hey Louie, you swung at a lemon!

He’d jump up and say "Yeah, well, maybe I am Louie Lemon… and because we’re so close to Mexico, you can call me Luis Limon!

    Everybody laughed.

I then ask Dominic what his nickname was, and he said’ Don Domingo.

He added: Those are our Baseball Superhero names… don’t tell anyone!

Once we got home, we started to reminisce about the summer’s experiences and about the history of the game.

It was then that the boys came up with the idea of
