The World on Edge: Conflict Rising
()
About this ebook
Over the next few months, these men discover that a threat far greater than anything the world has seen yet is emerging; politics and diplomacy isn't enough. Teamwork, sacrifice, and patriotism are the only factors that decide the fate of a world on edge.
Tyler Humphries
I decided to start writing when I was very young, but didn't decide to start an actual book until I was in the seventh grade. I have multiple series, and this one in particular was started in the ninth grade. Over the years, I evolved it and rewrote it several times, perfecting many errors, content that didn't make sense, and adding more life to the conflicts. Writing as always been a good stress outlet for me, and it's just frankly something I really enjoy doing. I love the gift of being able to express myself, share with people the stories I've created, and show people that I'm different. I'm in the United States Marine Corps, and am stationed in North Carolina. I was born in Virginia and have lived there my entire life.

Private Taylor Robert McElroy
Akano Desert, five miles from Akano Village
Southern Terrah
February 8th, 970
The blazing desert sun beat down on newly graduated Ocian soldier Private Taylor McElroy. He stared out into the endless sand inside the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, his heart rate steadily increasing. The eighteen year old pushed up his brown Three-Color Digital Pattern—or three pat
—Mk.7 combat helmet to wipe sweat from his forehead. This was his first combat mission since he graduated Infantry Training Battalion in December, two months after his boot camp graduation; go figure he was the only one starting out with his full gear on: helmet, night vision, tactical goggles, brown three pat plate carrier, brown three pat combat trousers and blouse, black combat boots, and water source on his back. No sooner did his fireteam take a look at him and laugh.
Macky, man, relax. It’s just another patrol; nothing to be concerned of,
his fireteam leader, Corporal Chris Gerdel, told him prior to leaving FOB Gressler, lose the night vision and lose the blouse; it’s hot out there.
He did as he was told; his fears escalated as he rode in the back of the light brown HMMWV, wearing no utilities top, just a black skivvy shirt with his plate carrier over it.
Two months ago, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion 4th Infantry Regiment was sent to the desert country Terrah on a humanitarian aid operation to repair small villages and towns after a deadly three-year civil war. The operation soon turned to a combat operation as militants and insurgents from the victorious clan began attacking the Ocian patrols and reconstruction operations. Fox Company Commander Captain Robert Clarke was ordered by 2/4 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Rames to relocate to Forward Operating Base Gressler to begin security operations near Amascus, one of the major cities overrun by the clan.
-Halt the convoy right here,
ordered Sergeant James Parker, McElroy’s squad leader, over the platoon’s radio. Second squad, third platoon was out on their daily routine patrol of the area. Today, their objective was to search for any signs of improvised explosive devices, communication jammers, snipers, or scouts positioned around the village. They had heard that the militants were starting to plant IEDs in the street and snipers in the dunes to prevent anyone from entering—and exiting—Akano.
McElroy’s HMMWV came to a stop as the driver, Corporal Gerdel, was ordered. He looked at McElroy, Lance Corporal William Young, and Lance Corporal Michael Bowne, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat. You guys ready?
he asked as he turned the HMMWV off.
Oh yeah,
Lance Corporal Bowne, a machine gunner, replied. He gave his M249 Squad Automatic Weapon a pat on the feed-tray. Been waiting to use this bitch,
he said again. The fireteam laughed… except for McElroy, of course, who watched the other two fireteams get out of the HMMWVs.
Macky,
said Gerdel.
McElroy looked up to him, and raised his eyebrows slightly.
You okay?
Yeah,
replied the eighteen-year-old.
First combat mission, huh?
asked Young.
Yeah.
McElroy said again.
Well hey, you seem like a guy I can trust, can you hold the HMMWV keys for us?
Oh shut the fuck up,
McElroy laughed. That was a common joke to boots in the Ocian Army… HMMWVs didn’t have keys.
Gerdel chuckled. Once that first bullet flies by your head, your training will kick in and you’ll know what to do.
Hope so,
said McElroy as he reached into a magazine pouch on his plate carrier and took out a magazine. I carried extra ammo just in case.
"What didn’t you carry? It’s probably gonna’ be another one of those stand offs we had a few days ago. You know, see the enemy, call into command to see if we can light em’ up, get denied, stand there for an hour with our rifles pointed at their fuckin’ heads, only to have them retreat back into the city. This shit’s getting annoying, said Young.
I joined the Army to kick some ass, not to watch it run away."
McElroy nodded in interest; he didn’t know what to say, either. He wasn’t a great conversationalist.
Feeling better?
Little bit,
McElroy answered Bowne.
Bowne laughed. Let’s go see what it is this time.
McElroy swallowed his fear and dismounted the HMMWV with his fireteam, stretching and inserting a magazine into his L85 service rifle. He grasped the handgrip and assured the Rifle Combat Optic and IR Laser Pointer was secured onto the rifle tightly; it wouldn’t be good to lose those like he
