    FOREWORD

I am delighted to be writing the foreword for this book which has a powerful and transforming message, told as a simple, but moving story about ordinary people’s lives. Factory Smiles is a clean story, which flows from a clear and neat mind.

Marlon and Janaye bring you face to face with hopeless situations and make you walk a journey with broken and hurting people. As you read this story, the world that you see is very much our world. The world of the Island of Misery, Village of Addiction, Village of Masks, places that contextualize where the story is told, speak so much of the world we are in. The characters with their personal struggles are people all desperately looking for solutions and more meaning to life. As you follow the struggles of these characters, it is easy to identify with them as we are forced to reflect on our own lives, and of course that of the fallen humanity around us.

Above all, this is a story of hope as we see people coming out against all odds, to discover a new force that lifts them above their circumstances. Transformed characters carry the torch of hope and help others come out of darkness into light as they experience the same positive transformation. The total result is resounding as people turn from misery to joy, from hopelessness to meaningful and fulfilled lives.

Marlon and Janaye have written this beautiful story using unconventional language, to portray deep spiritual truths. It is so refreshing and exciting as you read about the Creator of smiles and all those other innovative terminologies that reflect deep things of life, in a very user-friendly fashion.

Factory Smiles is a book that can help set people free from bondage and release their inner treasures. The story clearly teaches and shows us that we can be ambassadors of hope and love, in order to turn a decaying world around.

I believe that as you read this book, you will be enabled to go on and discover and rediscover the hidden treasures in your own life, and gain a new impetus to impact the world around you.

    CHAPTER 1

ZAYU’S STORY—JOURNEY TO THE FACTORY SMILE

    Career Ambitions

Aravasa was a small modern town in a vastly developed area. The area was known as the Zone of Opportunities. People came from all over the world with a goal to have a bright career. It was divided into categories of two people: those who had found genuine happiness and those searching for it.

Zayu, a tall, slender ambitious man from Corsa Island near Africa, had just finished college and was ready to embark on his journey in the real world. Zayu was among the people in Aravasa who were seeking genuine happiness. He felt the best road to genuine happiness was getting into law school. He would become a wealthy lawyer and everything would fall into place.

Was this the best road to take? Would this road help Zayu tap into his potential and walk in his destiny? All these questions did not matter to Zayu at the time.

Laying his focus on legal studies, Zayu applied to various schools, sending application essays and recommendation letters. He was determined to get into law school one way or another. The prestige of the school did not matter, as long as he was seated in a classroom.

    The Store, Bliss

Zayu got a job working for a store to pay the bills and to pass time, as he eagerly awaited a call from one of the many law schools he applied to. This store was known as Bliss.

The economy had gone into free fall and people struggled financially, but this did not stop them from going to Bliss. The store was like medicine to their many worries in life. The "Bliss medication" did not last and they kept on coming looking for those gifts in the store that would make them smile for a moment. The short-lived smile was known as a rental smile.

A rental smile was a smile that was short-lived and came at a cost. It signified happiness, which was something most of the people in Aravasa were looking for. The problem was that this was not genuine happiness. Only a few in Aravasa knew the mysteries of genuine happiness.

    The Storms

Zayu awaited the calls from the law schools; but when no one contacted him, he became really frustrated. It was a good thing he worked in Bliss and he had medicine for such emotions. Whenever he got anxious and frustrated, he bought something from the store at a discount price and those emotions would dissolve for a moment.

As the anxiety continued, Zayu got more negative news. His parents in Corsa had lost their home to a flood. All the precious memories of childhood buried in the ground. He got a call from his parents and they assured him everything was okay, something Zayu did not believe. He could not go and check on his parents because they assured him to stay and pursue law school, and it was expensive going back home. Zayu was very close to his parents. He learned a lot of life lessons from them. They taught him how to treat people with respect and hold on to your faith. Zayu adored them for their exemplary parental skills throughout the years, and was grateful for the knowledge they instilled in him. It was difficult not to be there when they were going through the turmoil at home, but he had to carry on and keep believing.

The storms were just beginning. After a couple of weeks Zayu’s grandmother passed away. Zayu was very close to his grandmother, and she always encouraged him in college; she was one of the major reasons he was able to finish college without being homesick. She also always showered Zayu with gifts and her love was unconditional. Zayu contemplated leaving everything behind him and just going back to Corsa to start a new life, but his parents continued to encourage him to stay and concentrate on further education.

The stormy times seemed like they had no end. One day, when Zayu was working in Bliss, he noticed he began to lose vision in his left eye. He began to panic, and he went to the eye doctor who was in a nearby store. He had just gotten contact lenses from this place, and he thought the lenses were the cause of the decline in eyesight. One of the doctors of the store examined his eye, and told him it was a serious situation, and he needed to see a specialist. He called his family, Lindale and Aleyu, his sister and brother. They were all in a state of confusion. This was a circumstance they had never been in. They all rushed to the regional hospital, and Zayu was told he needed emergency surgery the following day.

The night before that ominous day of surgery, Zayu was fearful and he could not sleep. His brother and sister were just waiting and hoped everything would work out. It was not a night to savor.

The following day they went to the hospital and the best doctor performed surgery on Zayu’s left eye. He had a retinal detachment and the whole procedure was about five hours long. After the surgery Zayu was in excruciating
