Gilbert M. Stack impresses in his destined-to-become-legendary Legionnaire series--a well-written military drama in the writing of which Mr. Stack has apparently dipped his pen in the blood of wizards, for the series, although Roman-based, tips its toe into the supernatural with a blend of realism that makes one think -- yeah, this is what the ancient legions faced-off against.

In Winterhaven we have a dizzying cast of characters--the Lords and Ladies of the great Houses of the duchy--who dance the carefully threaded dance of political intrigue in a medieval setting that quickly becomes so believable you can smell the torn sod at the tourney and the perfumed beautifies at the balls.

Intrigue is rife, pitching sibling against sibling, and lord against lord, as each vies for power--each, that is, but for Sir Dhrugal, weak in body but with a mind bright and canny, who is simply trying to solve a series of mysterious murders, the investigation of which might be his death.

This series promises to be a different fare from Mr. Stack's Legionnaire series, illustrating an adept hand that isn't stuck in one genre. Salute, and well done. Looking forward to Book II.
