Use herbs in facials, body cleansers and other cosmetic applications. Finally, use herbs to scent the house and bring about a sense of well-being.

    Having an herb garden in your backyard is probably one of the most valuable things you can do. Most herbs grow in containers, so if you only have a deck or balcony, you can still reap some of the benefits of growing herbs.

    Growing herbs to use in your home isn’t anything new. It is a proven fact that herbs were used during prehistoric times. Wall paintings depicting herbs on the Lascaux Cave in France carbon dates back to 1300 to 2500 BC. Herbs were held in high esteem in ancient Rome and Greece where leaders were crowned with wreaths of dill and bay laurel. The father of medicine, Greek physician Hippocrates, used 400 different herbs for medicinal uses in the fifth century BC and herbal use goes on from the Middle Ages to Ayurvedic practices of India and Chinese medicine to modern times.

    The people of the Middle Ages started to design herb gardens with aesthetics and usefulness in mind. Some herb gardens were informal with a profusion of leaves and blooms while others were stringently manicured and completely symmetrical.
