      A Few Time-Tested Tips from Professional Apple Growers

      Many generations of apple growers have used simple guidelines to ensure the success of their orchards. These tips are handy for the professional grower as well as the hobbyist.

      1. Protect Your Trees with Paint:

      To protect their trees from chemical damages from weed killers and pesticides, professional growers will paint the bottom of their trees. They apply the paint with a glove or a rag. Once the trees are coated with protective paint, the growers can safely spray weed killer or other chemicals.

      2. Cut Low Branches:

      To encourage the tree to produce fruit on the top branches, a professional will cut all growth and branches from the tree to under around thirty inches above the ground. This is also a way for them to keep the trees growing upwards, and not into each other.

      3. Wind Machines For Frost Protection:

      Frost can be deadly to an orchard. Even one late frost can ruin all the trees overnight. Professional growers will use windmills, known as wind machines, to keep air moving on cold nights. When air is moving between the trees, it becomes warm enough to keep frost at bay.

      4. Ground Level Sprinklers For Frost Protection:

      While it seems a strange concept, sprinkling the trunk of the trees with water is a common way to protect them against frost. Even though it would seem that an ice-covered tree trunk would be even colder, the ice coating itself acts as a protection against frost. Professional growers do not use overhead sprinklers because of the risk of the trees developing diseases; these sprinkler systems are lower to the ground.

      5. Pluck Blooms To Avoid Fire Blight:

      Fire blight can destroy a nursey full of young trees without warning. This disease happens when young apple trees get water, from sprinklers
