They won at home against Phoenix (albeit in less-than-dominant fashion), and then Sunday lost in OT to Sacramento, who return basically intact a team that was the 3-seed last season. But Sunday's 132-127 loss is nonetheless a disappointment, because the Lakers had a chance to win, and instead let it get away. LeBron, Lakers Defense Anchor 106-103 Win Over Suns, Reach In-Season Tournament Semi-Finals: The Lakers, playing in their first ever In-Season Tournament quarterfinal, had a lot to think about Tuesday at the Crypt. There's the chance to punch a ticket to Vegas and a semi-final matchup against the Pelicans - something guys are a lot more into than most fans/media anticipated. There was the significance of a LeBron James/Kevin Durant matchup on national TV, something we haven't had nearly enough of over the last few years, and something that definitionally can't happen that much longer. And there was the chance for the Lakers to clinch the season series against Phoenix, which could become very valuable later in the year. Turns out, all of that was in play. The game had a playoff intensity, and after James noted that the team is taking the opportunity to play for something, because the opportunity is there. You have a chance to compete, go compete. Tuesday's 132-131 over the Raptors at the Crypt would be front and center on his resume. 41 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. He hit 13 of 14 free throws, including all of them down the stretch. And while Davis only had one block, it came in the final minutes against Toronto forward Scotty Barnes and helped preserve the win. It took too long for the Lakers to get him involved again after a scorching hot first quarter, but eventually Davis found the space to put the game away. Meanwhile, LeBron dropped 12 dimes and posted 22 points. Five other Lakers finished in double figures. As it was against the Clippers on Sunday, the Lakers were hardly perfect. The offense, particularly early, was awful, but it came alive late. The Lake Podcast episode

Jaren Jackson Jr. or Anthony Davis?: The Lakers are in a real, live playoff series for the first time in a couple of seasons, and it should be a barnburner! It's the Memphis Grizzlies, who have played quite well all season, save a mid-season lull. It's an intriguing matchup, to say the least. LeBron James and Anthony Davis as established stars, meeting Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., who are ready to emerge in the next generation of the NBA elite. But what else is going on, here? How are the Grizzlies going to match up against LeBron and A.D.? Is Dillon Brooks the key to the series? What about the Lakers role players? How much will L.A.'s perimeter shooting impact what we're going to see. Can Austin Reaves, Malik Beasley and the rest hit enough shots to force Memphis to play things straight defensively? The ability of either team to do damage in transition could be a huge factor, as neither team is exactly elegant in the half Podcast episode

The Lakers, led by LeBron James (40 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, 48 minutes), played through the tape. They did not quit, even while understanding that a win on Monday likely wouldn't have a happy ending overall. Unfortunately, there were too many things not to like. Anthony Davis did not provide nearly enough as LeBron was leaving everything he had on the floor. The Lakers, once again, couldn't shoot the ball well enough. Rui Hachimura (3-12) picked a bad night to be inefficient. Too many ill-timed fouls, not enough timely buckets. And that third quarter. Oooof. 36-16 Denver, erasing a 15-point halftime lead, and giving the Nuggets more than enough incentive to try and finish things off without having to play Game 5.
