    ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Chapter One- A Return to Endurance

Julie Burney wasn’t quite awake as of yet. A strong cup of coffee followed by a sweet muffin would be just the thing to get her sleep-addled brain moving in the right direction. Her husband, Abel, was heading to the golf course to cut the corner off the dogleg with his friends, Dr. Chadwick Winter, and Jose Primavera, as he did on most Wednesday mornings. This was her day to cheat.

Julie, Abel called from the living room of the two-story Gothic home they shared which sat behind the First Presbyterian Church in the small town of Endurance, California. Are you awake?

Growl, she mewled as she stretched her short legs in the large bed. Her lower back ached with a dull throb from Abel’s Tuesday night machinations. For an older man, the stately dog could still piss like a pup and had just as much energy.

Close enough, he replied, sitting on the side of the bed. With strong hands he ran his fingers down the side of Julie’s leg, caressing her into a semi-awake state. Julie was addicted to three things: Abel, writing, and... coffee. It was only because her body recognized her husband’s touch that she could comprehend the words he spoke to her caffeine-deprived brain. Secretly, she snuck off on Wednesday mornings to the Cupcakery for a dose of sugar and large quantities of coffee. When Abel asked, she let him think she’d sworn off the dark brew. We are having dinner tonight with the campus administrator at seven.

Seven. Dinner. Campus administrator, she parroted.

That’s my girl, Julie, Abel replied, leaning down to give her a morning kiss. Gentle hands raked through the full head of thick hair as she planted a full-on smooch on his lips, careful to avoid using her morning breath-laced tongue. You keep that up my dear, and the nine iron in my bag won’t be the only club getting a work out this morning.

Ooooh, talk that sexy golf talk, Julie purred, allowing her hands to roam down the side of his face she loved to touch, and see smile.

Her husband smiled a lot these days. He was full of life and, with the right dose of caffeine, she could match his limitless energy. He didn’t complain about her weekly java sneaks, though she suspected he knew of her escapades. At least she’d limited her caffeine consumption to one day instead of three or four every day. They both could live with that, and it seemed to amuse him that she believed she was pulling a fast on him.

See you this afternoon, Abel said, getting to his feet.

Julie flung the covers aside to reveal a nude body, very toned from the daily bike rides through town. At one point, Abel wasn’t absolutely sure that she would ever acclimate to the high altitude of Endurance, but as with all things Julie, the lady often surprised him.  Sleeping in the nude was still a surprise to him as he watched the firm bottom make its way to the bathroom.

Good gravy on a biscuit, Abel mumbled as he watched her walk away, knowing full well he was going to be late to the course this morning. The guys would understand, but right now, he was more fixated on putting off the back nine with a pretty little lady he called his wife. I’m going to be a little bit late this morning.

Abel unfastened his shoes and hastily removed his pants as he followed Julie into the bathroom for a bout of early morning practice before hitting the links.

You may be more than a little late, she called over her shoulder, winking seductively at him.

I can live with that, Abel replied. But I don’t think I can last another minute without you in my arms.

FULLY DRESSED; AND looking at Blue Betty: the beachcomber bicycle with the basket on the front, and a cute, blue bell that chimed to alert others she was coming through for coffee, Julie was half awake and ready to roll. The ride into town was less than two miles, and she
