As you will discover, Vancouver is a beautiful city, well-known for its appealing neighbourhoods, ocean and mountain views, pristine beaches, abundant green spaces and, as this book will show, delicious food. Forget Toronto and Montreal, Vancouver is the culinary capital of Canada! Okay, I’m a bit biased, but I think you’ll discover for yourself that Vancouver is a food lover’s paradise.
Vancouver’s made up of twenty-three distinct areas, which include Mount Pleasant, Kitsilano, Strathcona and Fairview to name a few. Fortunately, exploring them all is easy because Vancouver is such a walkable city. We also have a great transit system, public bikes and car sharing.
In this book, you will find well over two-hundred great places to eat. In each entry, there is a link to their web site, that way you can check out their menus and find out a bit more about the place and often they provide you with a map. I am sure you have an amazing time exploring the city and its eateries. Enjoy!
Coffee Shops
Several decades ago a Starbucks came to town. That marked the beginning of Vancouver’s thriving coffee culture. Our coffee shops offer much more than just a cup of coffee though. You can get all sorts of baked goods and sometimes sandwiches, soups and salads as well.
Bean Around the World
Bean Around the World has been around Vancouver for over twenty-five years. They’ve spent time developing relationships with coffee growers, particularly in Guatemala, even funding a community school there. Located at 1945 Cornwall Avenue, Kitsilano; 255 Powell Street, Downtown Eastside; 175 West Hastings, Gastown.
Caffè Artigiano
A local chain that found success by making consistently excellent coffee. They are located throughout the city; you might want to try their shop at 302 Davie Street in the West End or their downtown location at 763 Hornby Street across from the Art Gallery.
East Van Roasters
This coffee joint, housed in a very hip heritage building (original mosaic floor) is a 16-seat cafe and social enterprise of the PHS Community Services Society. Their goals are to provide excellent coffee, baked goods (their salted chocolate chip cookies are not to be missed) and locally made products and to support women re-entering the workforce. Located at 319 Carroll Street, Gastown.
JJ Beans
I go to JJBeans for their dark-roast coffee and their huge muffins…I especially like the oatmeal cranberry one. They offer both a vegan and vegetarian breakfast burritos as well. They have several spots around town; you might want to visit them at 402 Davie Street, Yaletown; 3020 Main Street, Mount Pleasant.
