What is Mindfulness?
Do you remember what you did throughout the day? I’m not just talking about getting ready, going to work, coming home, and eating dinner. I’m talking about real details. How did the first hour of your day go? What’d your coffee taste like?
If you can’t remember what you even had for breakfast or lunch without thinking really hard about it, you’re not alone. In fact, many of us can’t remember what we did in the morning, afternoon, or evening because of our lack of intention and the autopilot mode we operate in on a daily basis. We sit in the shower, and instead of focusing on the warm stream of water, we think about the horrible day we have coming up. Sound familiar?
That’s what is typical for most of us. 80% of the thoughts that occur in our minds are negative, and these thoughts are causing us unhappiness, shame, regret, and even anxiety.
I remember one time I was sitting in line with some friends for this new restaurant that was supposed to be amazing. We talked about it all week and were very excited to try it. However, instead of focusing on the time I got to spend with my friends while waiting in line, I instead let the thoughts of my work bring me down. I didn’t want to see my coworkers, I didn’t want to deal with the emails and endless tasks, and I knew that in a few short hours, I would wake up and have to go to work the next day. What a way to spoil a good experience, right?
Sometimes, we aren’t even aware of our negative thoughts. They just bring us down because we are experiencing the feelings associated with those thoughts. It’s our daily unconscious banter that is responsible for much of our frustrations. But wouldn’t it be great if we could change that?
Lucky for all of us, there’s a little thing called mindfulness. Chances are you’ve heard of mindfulness before. I’m sure you can grasp more or less what the fuss around it is about. In this book, I’m going to delve into the science behind mindfulness that proves it works. I will prove that it’s not just a practice for the spiritual and hippie crowds, but that mindfulness is for everyone.
To put it simply, mindfulness is our ability to be in the moment. We all have the ability to slow down and feel the world around us in present time, but much of how our lives are set up causes us to throw mindful living out the window. Being aware of what we’re doing, where we are, and what’s going on around us is a gift. And it’s a gift we aren’t using enough.
I won’t have to ask you to change your beliefs, because mindfulness truly is a one-size-fits-all thing. You can use it however it fits your needs best. It’s a lifestyle change that makes you fully present, aware of your thoughts and actions, brings out your innovative spirit, and helps you to not get too overwhelmed by the fast-paced world we are living in. Couldn’t we all use a little bit more of these things?
The Scientific Benefits of Mindfulness
Even though mindfulness has technically been around since the dawn of time, scientists are really starting to delve into the research of how it can affect our brains, bodies, and relationships.
One scientific study published in 2005 in NeuroReport found that those who meditated (part of practicing mindfulness) had thicker cortical regions, which related to attention and sensory processing. This region of the brain often thins out as you age, but meditation could prevent that from happening. Another study found that those who meditated showed more empathy and emotional awareness, as evidenced by the brain scans taken while participants were doing a compassion meditation. ¹
Your brain literally runs your life, but it’s not the only part of you affected by mindfulness. Another study in 2003 found that after meditating for eight weeks, people’s immune systems would produce better antibodies to fight off infection, which would mean less sick time for you.
And to make things even more enticing, mindfulness meditation has been proven to decrease cortisol, which is the hormone released when you are stressed. This was proven in a study conducted on a college campus, a place known to have high levels of stress! The students said that they experienced less stress, anger, anxiety, and depression compared to the students who did relaxation training instead of meditation. ²
Improves Relationships
Having some relationship problems? Mindfulness can help you with that! The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill conducted a study that showed there was a correlation between successful couples and practicing mindfulness. The couples who also practiced mindfulness demonstrated a deeper level of closeness, they were more accepting of each other, and they were just generally more satisfied.
